Internet Connection Sharing Problem

I have two PCs, running XP and networked via a Netgear hub at 10mbps.

The network works fine. The problem is that I can't get the internet connection sharing to work. :(

As far as I know, I have set everything up correctly. The host PC acknowledges when the other PC is trying to access the internet, because it automatically dials the connection (I've since turned that off - bloody annoying because the network PC seems to want to dial the internet at random times - as soon as it starts, and again periodically about every 10 minutes. This would cause the dial-up to take focus, and interupt whatever I was doing...)

But once the internet connection is dialed and connected, the networked PC can't access the internet - can't find the page.

Any suggestions?

BTW - I followed the M$ instructions for internet connections on the host and network PC. Host connects via dial-up, the networked on "never dial a connection", and on LAN settings, have unchecked all options ("Automatically detect setting"; Use automatic configuration script" and use proxy server).

:(

no idea, woulda said the never dial a connection bit, but since you tried that...

does the networked one try to dial up or is it just ******** altogether?

Does XP have a "Home Networking Wizard"?

Don't you need some kind of proxy on the networked computer for it to work? Although that is probably in the instructions.

I tried to make this work in Win98/95, but I think my problem was with the IP addresses, something about having them assigned manually or automatically, but can't remember it correctly.

You need to assign each network computer an IP adress. Start for instance with 10.1.1.1 (the server) and work your way from there (10.1.1.2, 10.1.1.3, ...) . If you want to connect to the internet, set up the Gateway and DNS servers for the network computers (except the servers) as 10.1.1.1.

Thanks for the suggestions. The host computer always worked fine, just not the networked one. I've now diagnosed it as being due to ZoneAlarm. The basic version doesn't support ICS; pro does. I turned that off, and the connection burst into life.

Still - the exercise was worth it, just to stop the damn thing dialing when I was mid-game.... :)

Firewalls always have some stupid annoying problems in them. especially the free ones :)
