You have met Creepster as our first new member of the GOTM staff, and now I would like to introduce you to a second major change in how the GOTM games will be organized for 2003.

Continuing with the process of "dividing up power", we have defined a role for a person to apply a very strong knowledge of how the games work to promoting a better set of scoring systems for all game events. This person should not be thought of as a score keeper, but instead we should view him/her as the "keeper of the keys" or the "controller in the power plant" that tweaks the knobs and turns the dials to make sure that the scoring systems provide proper recognition for player skills and performance. The title of "Scoring Steward" has been chosen for this role in an effort to emphasize the "stewardship" aspects of task that will hopefully guide us all to be better players.

The first major task in this area is to totally rework the Global Ranking system to incorporate results for multiple different game events. In 2002, we had only one game submission each month. For 2003, we will reemphasize the importance of having every player at every skill level participate in this one big "Game of the Month" but we will be adding three to five additional game events that may appeal to different segments of the player pool. You have already seen the the first of these options appearing in the form of the "Quick Start Challenge" or QSC.

It is important to recognize that the Global Ranking system will transfer and consolidate results from individual game events in to a progressive point system that will recognize a combination of the best and most consistent perfomances by players during the previous six months of GOTM events.

After this new Global Ranking system is in place, our "Scoring Steward" will lead us through changes to scoring system for GOTM games that will be implemented in February and March as we transition to allowing both Civ3 and PTW games in the GOTM events. These changes to the scoring system for individual game events will provide balance and recognition for the skills required to complete early victory games as well as supreme examples of command of the game that may require maximizing the internal civgame score.

We are fortunate to have a volunteer to fill this role who I feel will command the respect of all players and who has already has set a standard of performance for future players and Scoring Stewards to aspire to for many years to come.

No surprise here! His monthly post of a different score list was kind of giving himself away. Aeson is indeed the best man for this job. I'm glad he volunteered for such an involved role.:goodjob:

Indeed no surprise, when seeing the thread title I knew it had to be Aeson!

Great you're willing to take up this challenge, Aeson, and like Moonsinger I'm sure you're the best man for the job.

I look forward to Aeson's new scoring and global ranking systems. I'm pretty sure it will tighten the competition and better rate everyone's performance against all the competition. Any progress on this front will help everyone with their game play, which is what I think is the most important aspect of GOTM. :)

Thanks for the kind words. :)

As Cracker has already stated, we will be introducing a new global ranking system which will integrate the GOTM and QSC beginning with GOTM15. This is the change we are focusing on for now.

In the meantime I will continue to post the alternative GOTM results as I have been doing, in a strictly unofficial capacity.
