If you use a name that is invalid for a file the replay then silently fails to save.
I didn't bother to go into too much depth to determine whether its allowed in the game setup screen or not, but I changed the name in the INI file (to '*') so if its validated in the setup screen then it just needs to be validated when read from the INI.
