i never automate my workers, so i don't know if this is something automated workers on player-side can do, or if it's just a computer-controlled city thing. but i just took over by culture an AI city and it has a square of tundra which is irrigated and giving me 3 food. i like it, that's nice, but my own workers can't irrigate tundra at all, even after the technology that lets me irrigate without fresh water nearby.

irrigation can spread now, thats a fact
but i dono if it can be spread to thundra

irrigation spreads on its own without workers? that's wild, i haven't seen it do that. and even if that's the case, i think it spreading to tundra and increasing it to 3 food is a bug.

I did manually irrigate a tundra square with fresh water in the modern age in a game of mine.

PS: it gave me 3 food because of some late tech bonus which I can't remember :P

caveat: you have to research Civil Service for farms to be able to spread irrigation.

yeah but they won't spread without working as KMadCandy was assuming.

It seems to me that only tundra with direct access to fresh water can be irrigated, despite having Civil Service.
Maybe the water would freeze on the long way through your irrigation? :crazyeye:

yes I can semi-confirm this, but I didn't actually double check when I seemed to encounter this problem

still wierd to spread water, and so farming, through tundra :)) dunno how you could plant vegetables in permafrost :) but maybe they have awesome strong genetics so the vegetables can live there :)

I found tundra to be useless, unless there is a river along the edge or hills. The you can irrigate, build mills, etc.

what i'm saying is that i can't irrigate tundra that's not on a river, even with civil service, even when i'm up to researching future tech. but i took over an AI city and it contained a tundra square not on a river that was irrigated, and gave me 3 food, and that seems to me to be a bug. maybe automated workers can do it? i wouldn't know, i never automate mine.

i read panzooka's thread as saying that 'irrigation can spread' like forests, without any workers. if that's true i've never seen it.

in my own cities, if i have a tundra square that's not on a river i can't irrigate it. but the AI can. so seems to me there's a bug there.

interesting, you didn't specify that the square did not have fresh water though ;)
Needs to be tested further I think.

I can confirm this bug, I could not irrigate tundra squares despite having all the relevant tech and the tundra being on the river. In the end I put a watermill on the river so it worked out though.

Interestingly I noticed I could not put a watermill on the tundra on the opposite side of the river?! One mill per stretch of river or what?

I irrigated a tundra-forest square in my first game. Fresh water from a river. The forest was chopped in the process. After this, the tundra square gave 2 food, 0 hammers and 1 gold I think.

Sounds like a bug to me. Can you get a screen shot? There is a sticky at the top of the bug forum that you could add this too.
