Can I set the CIV III program to run, w/o me playing, and just watch the AI advance the game?

You can do it with the editor, by turning debug mode on. This'll work for conquests, I'm not sure about versions before that. Let's see, the procedure would be:

1) Start up editor, go to Scenario->Scenario Properties, check Debug Mode, hit OK.

2) If you want to watch but not play, you need to put your own civ someplace out of the way. Skip this step if you want to play. Choose map->generate map and choose how you want the map. Find or make an island in the middle of nowhere. Do Map->Set Active Player->Player 1, then do Map->Select Brush Type-> Overlay->Player Starting Location and put it on the island.

3) Then Save As, call it something like "observe" and put it in the Conquests\Scenarios folder.

4) Start up conquests, choose Civ Content and then pick "observe.biq" or whatever you called it. That should do it. Now, watch how utterly idiodic the AI really is!

Cool... I've wondered about this for some time now.

Edit: Hrmm.. I think I misunderstood... As I understan dit, this will still require you to hit enter to end turns, correct? I wanna just let the AI go at it and see what the result is when I go take a shower or make dinner or something ;) I don't suppose that's possible?

You could just set it to automatically end the turns, so that it doesn't wait for you to press enter. There's an option in the preferences screen...
Edit: I completely forgot about that, wasn't taking into account you still had a civ...

dont you still have to do something with your units/building to get it to end the turn?
I suppose if you just chose 'wealth' and had no units it would go on forever.

You could fortify your Settler and Worker and uncheck "Always Wait at End of Turn." I've never tried that; it might work.

It doesn't, I tried it after Kalach posted - still asks you to hit space/return.
You could always just stick a rock ontop of on of the keys :)

Maybe if you set both the Settler and Worker to Explore on a two-tile island they would just move back and forth.

When? Why? Even if you have no units to move and nothing to be built it still asks you? Proberly so it doesn't go on forever actually :p

As for auto-explore, I've never used it, but it seems to disappear as an option when there is nothing to explore. Unless it's only there in advanced options or something.

So how do you stop it if you do get it to run?

What are you learning by this exercise?

It would just be interesting. This is a feature I hope is implemented in Civ4...but that's not for this forum.
