i have only recently just got 'into' civ, ive had it for years but i just havent played it.

already i think it is better than AOE, but on AOE especially online you have to be very you gotta have a pretty damn good strat to beat your opps.

i dont have an opinion or answer to this yet, as i havent played civ2 enough, just wondering what all you fanatics think

Civ2 is way harder. It took me only a month to learn how to get a bronze time under 14min. There's only one civ in AOE that you can really play and that is Assyrians because all other civs are just too slow to stop a chariot archer rush. You'd have to wall in and that will only hold a short time because they'll have catapults just as fast. AOE is so limited it's pathetic.

Here is my answer in another way:

Civ is slower than aoe, coz it's turn based and range from 4000bc way to 2000AD.

You have more strategic choices to make than AOE, thereore civ is a game need more strategy, and deeper than any known games so far.

there are simple formulars tho. Just like in AOE, the key was to build a lot of villager, in civ there is a strategy called ICS, which is build as many cities as possible without anything else. But unlike AOE, in civ, there are many more strategies other than and also better than ICS. But it all depend on situations. You have to make choices based on different situation.

At last, based on a rule: you like what you did a lot. CIV is very addictive than aoe and other games, since you generally invest a lot time on it, even you want to finish a single game. Once you finish one, you want to start another one. Once you began, you, your study, your career, your GF/family are in danger. (j/k) Espacially if you are smart and can do well in it

I would have to agree with Eyes...AOE is pale in comparison to Civ overall do to how limited it is, but the details involved in a battle in AOE certainly calls for a strategic mind. As strategic as one would have to be to play Civ? I think not...too many factors at play when Civing, whereas AOE is primarily a war game.

i forgot about the time limit (ends at 2000ad)

now i realise my first 'real' game of civ is pretty much crap, i am nearly reaching 2000ad and i havent even researched much

i say 'real' because i have had civ1 and 2 for years and i have played it many times but i never would finish a game because i always ran out of money, but now i have figured that out, i can go on and enjoy it.

Civ2 is truely the best game ever, but dont like the settler graphic in civ2 !

I routinely get my a** whooped in AOE II online, so I have to say that there is a ton of strat in AOE. I just don't know it

. But, the strategy is usually the same (Build more villagers!!!) and then create a huge army to crush other guy. So I think that AOE just pales in comparison to Civ's strategy choices and overall satisfaction level.

i need help, i declared war on the other civ, now all i think about is war.

all the other 'new' cities i built, well i cant be bothered with them. i jst let them rot.

now i keep getting notices about food shortage but it is just too much for my head

i cant handle it !

Hey Keyser,

I can't get over the fact you have "had civ2 for years but I just haven't played it". Sacrilege!! Glad you're enojying it now though. If it's too much to maintain all your cities why don't you just have one city and then invade every body else!
Alternatively play tetris instead

hey, shut the hell up !

maybe i just need to take it slowly, after all it is turn based !

if it was real time, i would probably be in a hospital.

I enjoyed AOE (Age of Kings actually--is that the same?) when I played it at my friend's over the holidays, but it was like junk food compared to the meat and potatoes that is Civ!

Is AOE strategic? Of course. What game isn't? But it's got nowhere near as much room for creativity as Civ2.

In terms of strategy games, CivII still reigns supreme.

In RTS, I prefer Starcraft over AOE and Total annilation is damn awesome as well. But CivII is the most challenging. In AOE , alot of the time its all about villagers and sometimes building a bunch of axe(its worked for me before) and going to kill the other players. Of course formation(infantry, knight, then those giant arrow-thingies) are very important in AOE just like building a fort outside an opponent's city on a hill is in civ. Each game has its hardships but CivII is overall more fun the play.

Civ-2 has many more strategic options then AOE. AOE is best when played alone with scenarios.

You can't say AOE is all about building 300 units. Okay, you build your 300 club guys and I'll be 5 centurions and we'll see who wins....
