Title speaks for itself, is there any way to run Civ 4 on mac with more than 18 Civs in a game? Something to change in the XML?

Try loading the mod History Rewritten. It runs on both Mac and Windows. However, although the mod will run fine without them on a Mac, some of the features only work on Windows. HR includes many more civs than 18. If you can select more than 18 civs under Custom Games in HR, then the answer is yes and the HR thread would be a good place to ask how to do it. If 18 is the max that HR will let you select, then the answer is no. The mod was originally written by a Mac user, who then branched out to Windows for more things to change but he kept the mod able to run on a Mac without the extra changes. There is not a special version for Mac. HR determines which machine it is running on and acts accordingly.

So is there no chance of using that framework in the base game, I'd have to be playing the mod?

Never mind, they don't let you go over 18 on history rewritten anyway. No other suggestions?

The limit is hardcoded in the (GameCore) DLL. Various DLLs with an increased civ limit are available in the download database, but my understanding (having never played Civ or any game on a Mac) is that you'll need Wine (or a virtual machine) to load any DLL mod on a Mac, and that Civ 4 on Wine can be somewhat challenging to set up. There's a subforum for Civ 4 on Mac, and a Wine guide by z0wb13 is pinned there. Looks like it may well be outdated however.

If you want to play with more than 18 Civs on a Mac, you will need to run the Windows version of CIV in a virtual computer running on your Mac. Wine, I believe, is a free but complicated way to do that. I run Parallels, a commercial program that is not too expensive, on my Mac, in which I run Windows 7. Of course, you would also have to purchase a Windows OS. Among other programs that I need to run now and then under Windows, I have CIV BTS installed there as well, which enables me to run any of the mods that don't work on MacOS.
