Well I have this nice stack of ICBMs that's just itching to get dropped, except my main enemy happens to have SDI ready - and it's quite effective.

I also have big-ol stack of bombers and a very sizable regular army (tanks, mech inf, the works - i already won this game via spacerace - i'm just playing for fun). Whatever city happens to have the SDI project, I can just take it the same turn I declare war and then let loose nuclear armaggedon. The problem is that I can't find the damn thing! All 4 of my spies went through each and every one of his cities with no success.

What is going on here? Is it that SDI is a "project" and thus not actually part of a city? Is there any way to get rid of it once it's up?

I guess it would make sense that it's not part of a city since it's all just sattelites - but still. My poor nukes :(

If that's the case - I guess it would be fun to mod-up sattelite warfare at some point, heh.

Nah - without SDI nukes are way too uber. It would just be nice to let you get rid of it somehow.

What really REALLY bugs me are nuclear shelters - those are way way too effective. It should be in the 30% range, not 75%!

It logical that the SDI defence is a project and not city specific improvement, but I always assumed, mainly due to the exceptionally cheap cost of the SDI, that they were city specific and only protected the city that it was built in, meaning that every city would need one for defense. This made more sense to be as there production times at that point in the game is only 1-2 turns more than a tank. If only 1 is needed for Empire defence then I cannot see many reasons to build ICBM's considering they then have a very small window of opportunity that they could be effective used in, as a 75% failure chance is definitely not worth the risk when you could have 2-3 guarenteed damage not one shot tanks instead (and any nation without SDI by that time are gonna be easy to roll over anyway with conventional warfare).

There must be a bug with the spies and displaying city views of enemies, the small / great wonders do not appear. I noticed that in a multiplayer game but seems likely that that is the case for single players also

Mmmmno - I could have sworn I saw the Epic wonder and the Scotland Yard in there.

bump for the morning crew

Assuming you find the city where the enemy's SDI was built, wouldn't razing the city destroy it?

That's his plan. :) But it depends on the SDI actually being present in a city so he can take it.Hence his question (which I unfortunately cannot answer either).

LOL...right. Was this the way to do it in Civ III? I don't remember. Usually never reached the point of nuclear war.

Projects can't be destroyed. So . . . you're stuck. There are no tactical nukes like there were in 3 that could evade the system, no spies planting nukes like in 2. And now there are bomb shelters so even a hit doesn't do that much damage.
Basically you need a lot if you are going to launch a nuclear war.

Tac. Nukes couldn't evade SDI. That was just a myth. SDI only checked that its target had the "Nuclear Weapon" flag, not that it was immobile or had infinite bombard range.
