Is it worth defending against a sure loss?

I'm fairly new to the game, and the first civ I joined ended up having a couple non-participating members. So in other words I'm on my own. I'm now being invaded by a civ that's more advanced than me, not too much but enough that they have more advanced troops and in larger numbers than I can hope to match.

I have no techs or wonders for them to gain, so I'm guessing that they just want a military medal out of it. The question is, do I even show up to fight? If I do fight it out, I'll lose all of the troops I throw at them. But if I don't, do I really lose anything (except for maybe a little bit of my pride)? The documentation says I don't, but I trust the people on this board to know the right answer much more than civ's legacy of not documenting all there is to know.

Thanks in advance.

If you don't have anything to lose, then all that will happen if you put troops in is that you will lose troops. If they have OVERWHELMING force, you probably won't even make them lose troops. Better not to bother.

I have noticed that noobs will often declare war for no benefit. Pay them no mind.

Of course, with the 20 hour wait, maybe they were betting you would have a wonder?

Thanks for confirming what I suspected.

He's no more a noob than I am (while I've played Civ for years, I've only been playing Civ World a couple days.) He's actually in the same situation as I am, the sole active player of his civ, but he's got 6 or 7 techs on me. There's no way I'm getting a wonder anytime soon, so it can't be that. I suspect he wants a military medal, as that's all there would be to gain. Either that or he's just finding something to do while waiting for one of the runaway civs to wrap the last era up.

No point. If you think you have no way to win, the best thing to do is retreat.

I'd stay in the war til the timer hits 1 minute left if you got troops in, maybe the rest of your civ is waiting til the last second to throw units in. If they don't and you're in, retreat. If they do, and the strength stays somewhat even, stay in.

If you're not already in, wait til the last minute and throw your troops. Also try to communicate with your teammates and see if you can get leos and himeji - if not obsolete - done at the last minute going into battle.

Those two wonders getting done at the last minute can greatly overturn the odds in your favor.

People will blindly vote to war. So if you are Defense Minister, it is a great way to gain medals to get promotion to King to get Era wins for Fame points (via teching mainly).
