is multi-player worth playing?

It would be fair to say that multiplayer works some of the time at best. Sadly civ 5 is an example of how you can go backwards when upgrading! Civ 4 functionality was superior but with a bit of luck once all the patches are finished and the bugs sorted it will be worthwhile.

Yes MP certainly needs some patching, and I fully expect that to happen, just as Civ3ptw was barely playable at launch, now yes, there is no reason a game should have been released in 2010 like this, but at least Firaxis has had a good history of fixing stuff in the past.

Actully Biz has that backwards. SP is great but MP needs some work

I don't think he is commenting on the relative lack of bugs, but of MP being more fun to play than SP, at least for him and many others like myself.

Well MP has the potential to be at least as fun as SP but currently it lacks the animation (should be optional,) the AI is worst than SP AI, and the inability to manually save games just to name a few issues.
But once the MP is the same as SP (but with the ability to play other players as well as AI) then MP will be as fun if not more fun than SP.

Well personally for most MPers animations are a non-issue, we would play in strategic view if needed, to not slow the MP game down. Same with AI, we don't use it at all, so who cares.

MP is all about beating other human players, and all the smarts and unpredictability that that brings.

The singleplayer AI is just way too bad for that part of the game to be enjoyable if you're talented at civ.

Most of the people who enjoy the single player aren't really in it for the strategy game. They want more of a self-paced empire simulation where they can do lots of things and pretend that it's strategic.

I played a series of IV games, through Hamachi, with friends. Will that work in 5 or do we need to go through Steam?

Civ4 doesn't use steam, but you can register "non-steam games" with the Steam program and launch them with steam, this has the advantage of having the steam overlay available.

But Civ4 uses Gamespy for MP and will run fine with no steam, and direct IP even bypasses GS for Civ4, so Hamachi works just fine for Civ4, it does not for some reason work for Civ5 LAN mode and Civ5 does not yet have direct IP

I've seen this in many games. The issue is lag between certain players. Even though you see everyone as "green" there is likely two players that don't see each other as green because of high lag between them.

Unfortunately unlike Civ4 players can not see each others lag in the game interface.

What you have to do in this situation is ask all players who they see as not green. You should get two players not seeing each other as green, or perhaps more that two players will be involved.

Once you find out who is the problem have them quit and rejoin, make sure they exit Civ5 and exit Steam and restart everying, even rebooting their moden or computer may help if they are having connection issues.(like a younger brother D/Ling movies when they are trying to play Civ5).

If rejoin does not work you may have to reload the staging room and have the problem players join first to make sure they have a good data connection.

Worse case if you can't solve the problem, one of the high lag players will have to be dropped from the game.
