Is patch 242 important?

How necessary is patch 242 for Civ2? What does it fix?

I've downloaded it several times on 2 different computers, and when I try to open it the message comes: "cannot find Smedsnet.dll. Windows needs this file to run c:\Windows\temp\civ2\exe. "

My CD is the original Microprose one with a 1996 date on the label. I looked at the contents of the game folder and there is a file that says "Smedsnet.dll." So it is in the game CD. (What IS Smedsnet.dll?)

Would appreciate your response and help.

WEll, i cannot say much about dll and that crap, but i have the patch, and it's workin fine (i got MGE, it's patch 1.3) but i guess the effects are the same for that matter.
My opinion is that it really makes the game more fun and different + i assume most civers have the newest patches installed, so for multiplayer that worx best as well.

Thunderfall, I have already downloaded the 2.42 patch, but thank you. And yes, I have finally put in the Civ2 folder where it opened and worked.

So my real question now is what does it do? What things does it change/improve?

Well I think that there is at least one very important thing that it fixes - and that is the percentage error that occurred after 320% in the original version of the game!!!!!

But there are probably other things to, that is just the first thing I noticed!!
