Is the Great Lighthouse overpowered?

The only case when this wonder falls rather short is when you have no early neighbors whatsoever. But even then, it will help for quite some time once you discover Astronomy...
Better than that, get Optics and send the caravels out.

Yes, but even if you establish open borders, you don't get trade over the ocean before Astronomy. Still, it is good to spot your soon-to-be trade partners as early as you can.

The fact that a wonder is great on certain map types does not mean it's "overpowered."

On most map types, like Pangea, the Great Lighthouse won't do nearly as much for you.

I some how always build it in my costal capital in pangea.... and what a boon! I have 17 all costal cities surrounding friendy land locked Saladin and..... I'll let you guess!

Some wonders are quite useless, the Great Lighthouse not and it's very good as it is because it is a challenge to be able to build it before enemies,on water lands of course.

I'm curious... Other than the Shak.... (whatever you call it; I can't pronounce it even when I see it!! -- the one that supposedly grants all world religions), WHAT wonder do you feel is useless? I've built them all and feel that each and every one gives me some advantage I didn't have before.

Shwedagon Paya - which doesn't give all religions, but access to all religious civics.
Back on topic, GLH is excellent on archipelagos and the like, far less good on a pangaea. The converse is true of the 3G Dam, Notre Dame and Statue of Liberty, whose effects are limited to one landmass. So on the whole, things are reasonably balanced.

I am well aware that this wonder is of little help on most pangeas...
I should have made my point clearer: isn't the GLH overpowered for archipelago maps? I mean, since building or missing it means the difference between an almost certain victory and a more or less struggling game, it may be considered overpowered for that type of maps.

I don't think I have ever built the GLH since upgrading to BTS. I'm too busy trying to get the Great Wall, Oracle, and Great Library...all of which I think are more useful.

I guess it just depends on your playing style.

I played a archipelagos map and there were perhaps 3 river side tiles on the entire map. In that instance, I'd say the 3 Gorge Damn. Not that it's ever a useless wonder, it's just practically unbuildable on those maps unless you start out with river tile close enough. Of course the AI had all 3 river tiles and naturally, the AI just had to build their cities one tile away from the river. That meant I would have to raze all the surrounding cities, and start a new one from scratch just build it. By that time I would have done that, and built up the sufficient population, improvements and production buffing buildings, the outcome of the game would have been a foregone conclusion.

Back on the thread's main topic, I don't think Gr Lighthouse is overpowered. Sure, it's godly under the correct circumstances, but not overpowered. Its unique effects expire by midgame and by itself, it won't keep a mismanaged economy afloat.

umm, yeah, and many more wonders (the "this continent" type, which are often among the most powerful) are way more powerful on certain maps too. it's like saying that duns are "overpowered" on highland maps, or that the 3 gorges dam is "overpowered" an huge Pangaea maps, or that jaguars are overpowered on maps that are covered in jungle and have no copper or iron resources. just because something is adapted to certain geography doesn't make it "overpowered", it just makes it more of a priority on certain maps because it is more useful.
