Hello, total newbie here. Until I heard of FFH from Tom Chick I didn't even own Civ4. Really enjoying the mod but kind of overwhelmed. Is there a flow chart of sorts for the techs? I didn't see one in the manual and when the game asks me what to research next I fell kinda like I'm just grabbing the next thing that looks good. Or are you just supposed to learn as you go?

In the game the tech tree screen is arranged as a flow chart. It is right up there by the religion and civics screen. You can also get to it by asking to see the details when the popup comes up asking you pick what tech you want to research. This is the same as in Vanilla civ.

It can be a little hard to read at first. A tech has three areas:

1) The goods. What the tech gives you. Mousing over the tech or looking at its icons tells you what it gives you.

2) The requirements. The techs listed (by icon) in the upper right corner of the box are REQUIRED for that tech. You must have all of them (Rarely more than one or two) to get the tech.

3) Optional Requirements. Techs also have an arrow that points to another tech after it. For instance, Ancient Chants points to Mysticism. To research a tech you must have researched at least one of its optional requirements and all its mandatory ones.

For example, education has two mandatory requirements, Ancient Chants, and Agriculture. You need both to research education.
For example 2, Sorcery has 4 optional requirements (Alteration, Elementalism, Necromancy, Divination) and 1 Mandatory requirement (Writing). You must have writing, and one of the other techs to research it.

You'll get the hang of it after not too long.

Thank you all for the kind help. I'm getting a little further in this game. I just love the mod. The goblin raiders and dungeons make exploring fun. I still have so much more to see and discover. Right after I posted this question I found the sticky where the tech tree was posted. I couldn't get my computer to print the whole thing so I wrote it out by hand! This actually helped me to learn and remember a bit what comes from what. The game has quite a steep learning curve but learning is fun.
