I have looked through both manuals (CivDos and WinCiv) to see if there might be a way to upgrade a unit once it becomes obsolete.

For example, I am playing a game now and built several triremes hoping to find another island 3 moves away. There is nothing around my whole island that is 3 moves away. So I finally get Sail. Great. Now I am finding other lands and civs, BUT - what can I do with all these old triremes? Is there no way to upgrade them to Sails?

There is no way to upgrade in Civ1.

In Civ2 they introduced a new wonder, Leonardo's Workshop, which automatically upgrades obsolete units one notch upon new tech advances. There is no other way to upgrade in Civ2.

In Civ3, they allow one to upgrade any unit for a cost.

Thank you, Ali, for your quick reply.

I guess the lesson for me is not to build too many triremes! (They are helpful if land is close by, but if it isn't, nothing is gained except the knowledge that nothing is close by.)

Thanks again.

No Upgrades in Civ1
Upgrades are wonder dependent (Leonardo's Workshop) in Civ2
Upgrades are possible in Civ3
Upgrades are possible in Civ4 but with greater freedom

Disband the trireme units early if they are costing too much to maintain also, that way you can have some shields dedicated to building a sail, frigate, ironclad etc...
