Is there any way to stop this?

Sometimes, my game just freezes, usually late into the game. The water continues to move, but everything else is just stuck. Also, the little blinking box in the bottom-left hand corner stops at dark grey.

What causes this and/or how can I stop it? I was playing a really good game.. but it just froze.

I'm thinking it's because I have too many military units. Is this true?

Does this happen when changing city improvements? If so, this is the "instant advice" bug. Simply turn off the feature to work around.

Otherwise, I seem to recall this sort of thing happening when conventional memory dropped below a certain amount. I don't remember the bare minimum, but I think it's in the 580-600 kilobyte realm assuming VGA graphics.

Nah, I know about that one. It isn't that. I believe my grandfather told me it's when I had made too many units, but I was never really sure about this.

The instant advice bug I know about also. If I were to play on Chieftain, I would know to turn that off at the very beginning as I had that problem a lot during my "beginner times".

Not really sure what you're talking about after that, though. I just remember it was after I had crafted a massive empire (late in the game) every single time. If I try restarting the game, it will always freeze at the same time, too.

Could it be too many cities? I don't know.

in case of such a problem, the computer configuration (exact hardware) and the used OS would be helpful to know.

1. Do you play it in DOSBOX and with winXP? :mischief:

2. /me played civdos now already on

amiga hardware & os
intel 386 and win 3.11
amd "p1 clone" and win95
intel p2 and win95c
intel p3 and win98se
amd 1200 and win98se
amd 4400 x2 and winxp and linux with DOSbox

and all the different graphics and so on

and in EVERY configuration i had different problems playing civdos...

it looks like that arithmetical problem to me / stack overflow, like that...
there was a possibility to give 'more pages' in DOS (editing a windows setup file, can't remember)
OR
to create a virtual RAM disk and play civdos within (i remember i did back in the days)

GENERALLY it's always a good idea to SAVE GAME every turn or after some turns regularily. ;)

Upload the SVE and MAP files, maybe some of us can figure it out by playing it?

I used to have a bug where the game closes when an opponent builds a spacehip, but it went away eventually.
