Is there no way to tell when and where your borders will expand?

I also hate how often you complete something and the production screen shows the wrong item!

What even determines this? Is it still culture? It seems to be very slow, and I couldn't find anything in-game that describes what the rules are.

Yeah, it's like it shows the previous thing, except sometimes it's even more random than that.

Yeah, it's like technically I did complete what it's saying I completed...but I've built 2 other things since then so this information is not relevant.

I guess that's what I get for asking for control over which tile will pop next. They remove all information.

It says when your cities expand when you have a city highlighted. Look for "Turns until border growth"

As for where it expands to, I haven't found anything that tells you before hand.

What determines the growth rate though?
It surely can't be culture?

almost certainly is culture

Based on XML files the formula for culture cost of the nth tile (after the first ring) is
10+6*n^1.3

Can you be a bit more specific?

I've looked for it for ages, and I still can't find it.

this could be an intended feature.

It seems an odd thing to remove from Civ5. The actual UI didn't feel like something people complained about (some had a problem with the mechanic generally, but not the display). It would seem logical to show it either during the city management display or the tile purchase display. Just have the purple hex and maybe write on the hex the number of turns. Since Civ5 had it, it seems weird for CIv6 not to have it. I would think it's deliberate except I can't think of any reason it would be, so it comes off as an odd oversight.

I was thinking they felt it wasn't realistic. Yeah I know, realism and Civ games don't always go hand in hand.
