Is this a little bit scary?

When Civ fans are starting to meet each other and have groups and stuff? I mean here on the net is one thing but to have a group of civ fans get together and talk about the game. Is this showing that people are starting to get to much into games?? Also you don't know who you will meet. Might be some freak who thinks he is really Alexander, The great. How do they great each other? HI i am Lenin of the Russian Empire? Or i am Alexander the great leader of the mighty Greek Empire?? Sorry but i think some people do take games too far. Not saying i don't like games i love them!! Just some people need to get a life!

Why would you sacrifice some time and go out instead of playing civ?

to may strange people out there. I was onceplaying online against some people i was useing the Greeks and one was useing the Romans, i took Rome and he threw a fit saying how i can't do that and cause he was playing the Romans he was suppose to be the most powerful nation in the game and how the Greeks never took rome in real life. I never play online after that.

About the online thing, I always try to play only against certain people, usually people I have judged to be not the kind you described that I recognise from here.

Well, if people meet and become friends on here I don't see the problem in them meeting up. But if it's just a bunch of people getting together for a CivFest, that's a bit too Civ-fanatical for my tastes.

I suggest that you seek an opponent here, and make sure to pick an opponent that has proven him/herself to not be a complete [insert word of the imagination here]. In my experience, most of the posters here (that last) are pretty nice.

ive met all kinds of ppl from the net, a few from games mainly from chatrooms... hell thats how I met my wife ( through a friend of hers i met in a chat room). Many gamers live in thier own little ( or big depends on the games settings) worlds, like that roman guy.To me sounds like he was just being a jerk , poor sport or wanted to be historically correct about everything.

I've met some pretty cool people from all over the globe on this site. I try not to be too controversial but that's more just my personality.

I have found certain posters I avoid and I wonder sometimes if they are what I'd call a Wizard of Oz (hiding behind an online facade for the attention). That's ok too maybe they need it for their self esteem because they don't get in RL.

What's different with taking a couple of beers with civ fans, in relation to football fans taking a couple of beers after a match? Most people here are quite mature, though some only mature for their age, but they're almost all better than your average football fan.
But then I don't get what's so special about taking the first contact over the net...

What Mrtn said: people do the same thing with football. They paint their faces in the Team Colors. They go overboard in other ways. Civ3 is just a different game.....
