Isolation - 174x174

This map was inspired by a 'islands' type game (each civ has its own island) I played where all the AI civs had contacted each other, had about 5 techs more than me, and refused to sell me anything, at all, all before I sent out my first galley. Not to mention all the islands were separated by about 3-4 ocean squares. Remarkable, ain't it?

Well, here is my solution:

isolation_minimap.jpg

As you can see, each island is separated by a huge mass of ocean. Only the luckiest of galleys or caravels will ever cross these waterbodies. The idea? Prevent the AI from contacting each other early and stickig together!

Have no fear! You are not alone! Each island has 2 starting locations, so it's you and a buddy (or the AI and its buddy  ) until magnetism. Each island is quite large, capable of holding probably about 20-30 (maybe more) cities depending on how close you pack them. the land is quite fertile, in fact maybe too fertile. I'm playtesting the map as I write, so I'll make any necessary changes.

The twist (another): two islands get three of the first 4 strategic resources, and only one of each of the last 4. The other 2 get three of the last 4, and one of the first 4. Each island get 4-6 of 2 different luxuries, as well. This induces much trading, once magnetism is discovered!

Lastly, all map rules are the same as a small map due to the restricted land mass. Barbs are raging for an added challenge. This map is by no means challenging, but just fun and mean to the AI.

Changes in v.1:

-barb camps removed (let the game place them!)
-small changes made to starting locations (a couple put on a river, the one with 2 flood plain wheat made a little more productive)

Like it or not, here it is:

I'm going to download the new version now, as the last one was great. The only thing I think could be improved is better, well-placed resources in all three of the catogories. Besides that, wonderful map. Makes for some good strategic gaming.

Thanks ! About the resources, I'll admit I went a little over board with the bonus resources, but hey I like it that way (faster game). I put most of the luxuries in clumps on the east/west ends of each island so one civ wouldn't dominate. And last, strategic resources - I pretty much randomly placed them. I made sure each civ had an equal opportunity for the more abundant ones.

Everyone - once Firaxis releases the new editor I'll be making another one like this. I find the major flaw with this map is the islands are too far away. Waging overseas war is one hell of a job. I hate making maps without zoom (esp this kind), so once I can zoom, expect more.

Oh, this sounds soooo great!!!! But i can't download it, since it is an attachment and my netscape doesn't like them. Could someone be so kind and mail it to me?

I love this map! This is EXACTLY what i've been looking for! I hate getting into wars early in the game (although i usually start them:flamedevi) so this will be a great game. I also have the same problem of meeting other civs that are much more advanced, at least that's when i play on monarch. Thanks for the great map!

thanks for all the positive feedback.

Some remarks on my games: I've played 2, one on regent, one on monarch. In both games I wiped out my opponent with Riders :tank::ar15:. In both games I researched Navigation and used my caravels to traverse the oceans. In both games all the AI civs were behind me in tech when I contacted them.

In my regent game, I pretty much dominated. I ended up conquering the puny English on another island as well, but it took 14 :gasp: turns to reach them - NO FUN (read previous post).

In my monarch game, I was pretty much head-to-head with the AI, they usually took a different path than me, so I bought and sold techs like candy.

More is to come, once Firaxis lives up to its promise.

I like the principle idea of this map (keeping from getting swamped early in the game). The request I have is that someone make (I can't make a decent map) a map of the largest size with them all on a large continent (say half the map) and me on an island (with enough land for say 20 cities) as far away as possible. I'd love to have something like this and would be willing to give then the advantages of the larger land mass and the difficulty of managing cities that far away. I'd be worth it.

What you mean by luck? Is it possible to cross these waters with a galley?

A galley only can sink in ocean/sea. It's not a must, there is a chance (probably 1:2 or 2:3) it will. If you get some type of supreme luck, you may cross those depths with a galley.

I didn't know there is a chance, all occasions I tried to cross oceans with a galley it sinked, so I thought it was impossible to do it.

Thanks.

I have found that i tend to get luckier when i rush a Temple or two the turn I put my Galley at risk. The difference was statistically significant, but I didn't do a test with a sufficient number of tries the other way round (i.e. rushing when the Galley didn't sink anyways).
