hey - newbie question

I just entered the modern age

im working on fission

I want to buy rocketry - everyone is saying "It can't be done."

What am I missing/forgetting here?

something extremely obvious I suppose

thanks

Well you don't have the money required to pay for it :p
No matter what you offer them, you won't have enough to cover the value of the technology.

You can't afford it :)

see - this is why i joined this forum

thanks gainy bo

Plus AI might be really pissed of at you if you broke trade deals in past...
For example you may have enough money to pay GPT, but because you broke trade deals before AI would never sell you anything in gold per turn turns, and you simply don't have enough money to pay cash upfront

See if you have enough money to steal it.

@Smellincoffee

IMO, if you have enough money to safely steal it, you have enough money to buy it.

Do you have a road to an AI and some resources or luxuries that you're willing to share? That could help.

That is not always true. As the techs get more expensive, it sometimes becomes cheaper to steal than to buy. In the upper difficulty levels (deity, sid) it's cheaper quite early to steal -- e.g. on Sid, Feudalism is cheaper to steal (if successful, of course) than to buy, even at last-civ prices. I've not played regent/monarch in long enough to have no idea where the break-even price is (on the tech tree), but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were significantly cheaper to steal a modern tech than to buy it -- especially if it was a monopoly tech.

Sometimes the AI will not trade tech for money no matter what. In the last game i had tons of money ( well over 4000 and 850+ per turn) and the AI still would not make a deal for techs. I ended up, stealing 5 modern age techs costing about 3500 for each "safely" steal. This was faster then reseaching techs. Sometimes resources and luxuries help when trading tech but not always.

A wild guess. Maybe they dont want to sell it to you couse they are going for a space race????

In my experience the AI will always sell if you have enough money. 4000 gold is not enough for modern age techs(especially not on higher levels/monoply prices). Even though you were earning lots of gold per turn your credit reputation must have been shot. After being in a bad deal once in a game, the AI will not accept GPT payment no matter how large.

And also Fission has nothing to do with the Space Race.

'tain't fission, it's rocketry. And I seem to find they won't sell wonder-enabling techs until the wonder is built.

One of the things that I have noticed is that the AI will not take gpt deals that you can not appear to afford. If you have set your tech rate very high (i.e. you don't have yourself paying maintenance since you have a lot of extra cash) then the AI assumes that you can not afford a gpt deal. This appears to be a C3C feature only.

The AI has never accepted deals where you're paying more gpt than your current income allows. You can deceive it, however, by temporarily lowering your science and/or lux tax rates, hiring taxmen specialists, rearranging tiles to high commerce, etc. and offer more than you can actually really pay. This is often beneficial for making a second trade with that tech (to recover some of the cost) and/or when that tech is all you need to win the game and/or you have a very large cash reserve and need part of it for another purpose or whatever and/or you are 99+% certain a sneak attack is coming.

But it's not a C3C feature only -- it's been there since the beginning.

Up to emperor on PTW 1.27f and Civ3 1.29f, I have no problem buying tech with wonder (ex free artistry), even the wonder havent been built yet. What I see is just price.
I think before the wonder is expensive, after the wonder it would be very cheaps.

Maybe I never offered enough money - by the time I'm able to pay ~10,000 for a tech, I can probably be confident of being able to research and build it myself.
You're right about them going cheap after - I was offered Free Artistry for 10 gold once
