I don't know how or why, but after 2 consecutive Emperor wins (one histographic and one diplomatic) my skills have somewhat 'deteriorated' and I haven't been able to win again. In my last game (I just finished today), I was out researched by everyone when usually I can keep even or ahead with them. I just don't know what's happening. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I have played somewhat less (only a couple hours) over the last few weeks. Might this be the problem?

Dunno. If a couple of hours of playing less made you that..then I gues that I won't evr play Monarch again, I'll have to switch back to Chieftain  since my last game was like 5 months ago..

Same thing happened to me. All you need you do is go back a difficulty level for a while. Then come back, lose, and repeat.

Welcome to the club HomeyG. I am starting to feel that I myself am regressing in Civ3.
Right now I am getting frustrated on being a better Civ3 player. I find that Monarch is becoming difficult to me and regressing back to Chieftan level .

So you're saying I should go back to Monarch for a while, then come back to Emperor and keep losing until I win again?

Don't feel bad guys, I've been playing civ for 2 years now, and rarely have I ventured passed the Warlord level...

Most people (I'm assuming) here probably haven't won on Emperor yet so I guess I have nothing to complain about. I am going to try stepping down to Monarch and get my act together, though.

When I suffered my regresssion, I played a few AW games to get me MMing carefully again, as well as concentrating more.

Maybe you should chage your sig? :D

I have just come off two straight loses, but in the game I am playing now, I am dominating the game. So I appear to have climbed out of my rut. :yeah:

Same here usually play demigod. I find that when i am that far behind it usually come's down to the ai using a science great leader and slingshoting to far ahead in techs to catch up

interesting post..the same thing has happened to me on multi player..used to be a top player..and now..a really bad one..on single player only about 50 50 on emperor and cannot advance to diety tho i have tried many times...maybe its like chess and u reach a point where u have to refigure ur tactics and style of play to get better and what happens is ...u get worse.

Well, I have added the goal to win on regent on my signature.

Just go back a difficulty level or two. Emperor is in the "Must be very prescise and make sure I do EVERYTHING correctly if I want to stay ahead of the game." category. I suggest regent. Everything is equal then. Except of course for the stupidity the AI brings to the game.

Yes! I won the GOTM on Monarch for the first time, and then cannot even win on Regent :| for some... I think I need to concentrate because I often make silly mistakes (I used an MGL to rush a Musketeer recently!), so probably need to play only while Im concentrating, i.e. not playing for long stretches

This is wierd, I started a Diety game on a tiny map with 3 players and I'm ahead in tech and I just captured The Oracle, and I have a strange feeling I might win this one. This is a change of pace. I wonder why this is happening.

luck, i've lost emperor and done nothing wrong, and won demi-god and been stupid, i'm pretty sure luck has a reasonable percentage into whether a game is won or lost if playing near your current skill limit .(obviously bad luck won't affect a chieftain game for an advanced player but may for a new one)

edit i think the very skilled pleyers 'make' their own luck or control it, eg using diplomacy to stop the monster civ etc etc

I've just beaten Emporer a couple months ago, and have been trying again. Sadly, I have not been able to attain this goal twice. Although I must admit, my first win was quite impressive considering it was my first Domination and Emperor win.

Well, I guess it turns out I didn't win that Diety game after all. I was ahead in the Ancient Times and part of the Middle Ages and then the AI just zoomed past me. I tried warmongering for that game and was sufficiently successful only using ancient cavalry, archers, and catapults due to lack of iron. I still hadn't discovered Gunpowder yet, but the AIs did. Interesting game it was, and now I will shut up....
