Chieftain
It's a scary thought. I was reminicing with a friend of mine and we found that we have been playing Civ for half of our lives so far! We calculated that we started playing Civilization in 4th grade.. when we were about 9 years old. It was my first computer game. I had been introduced to it by the older brother of a friend of mine. Love at first site you could say. I immediatly Had To Have That Game. I loved it even though I was terrible at it. Everytime I played I learned something new. Even though I had read the manual front to back a million and a half times, I still didnt quite get it for a few years. This didn't stop it from being an obsession. Sure, I could only beat warlord on occasion and the thought of playing Prince blew my mind, but there was nothing more fun to me then spending the weekend conquering the world.
I don't remember how I came to know about civ2.. it may have been that same older brother of a friend (a smart guy, he goes to Harvey Mudd now). I was amazed at the civilization of 80 million ppl he had built up and it took me several years I believe til I was able to reach that high
. Now of course it seems fairly simple..
Now I am 18 I don't play Civ2 (never played Civ1 again after playing Civ2) very often but once and awhile I will break it out for a game or two. Put the French in their place, that sort of stuff.
I blame Civ for the following things:
1) Stunting my social abilities. I am somewhat of an antisociopath and I blame this on computers. Without civ I would not have been introduced to the computer. Also I hate liberals now which I belive stems from this lack of a social life.
2) Civ2 obsession introduced computers to me. Argh, and I have been crazy about computers ever since. The very first week my parents got me an internet connection I created my first web page and that was back in '96. I try learn EVERYTHING.. and end up forgetting most of it when I move on to other things. flash,c,c++,vb,perl, php, python, unix, asm, java, javascript AND ON AND ON AND ON.
So in this way I think civ has affected my life even more dramatically then my parents have. Well, not really.. but close.
Oh and of course I created a civ3 wishlist soon after civ2 came out.. I think I'll search on some of my old computers for it.. My bet is that its probably pretty stupid, heh. That was before I got access to the internet and could read cool stuff about the game!
