I've had enough.

They were warriors. And like I said before, 5 out of the 8 regular warriors in my group had just fallen to that defending spearman....all in just a single turn

Sounds like you actually won that war. Xerses won the battle of Thermopylae, but had a similar complaint. He eventually went back to Persia in disgust.

Xerses, leading an army of 30,000 soldiers, "Our arrows will block out the sky."
Leonidis, leading an army of 300 Greek patriots, "Then we shall fight in the shade!"

By the way, losing 5 out of 8 combats is not nearly as unlikely as losing 5 out of 5. You really need to upgrade your forces. Try sword or horse.

Just be aware of something:

RNG are not random, at all.

The only truly random number is the first one. The rest are determined by that original number, called "random seed". So, there's a chance you get a really bad string of number, making it impossible to beat the deffender, or, on the other hand, having all attacks succesful. AFAIK, the RNG gives a 10 bit number doesn't it?. Well, then if your random seed is 934 (for instance) you may get this number string:

934, 912, 1002, 59, 892, 787, 983, 54, 786...etc

This string will make one of the parts (No idea wich one) win regardless of the A/D values, and it will happen everytime your random seed is 934. So you've got a 1/1024 chance of having that happen. Yes, sometimes it must happen.

Just don't worry about it! One day in your life, luck will give you back what it took! I've had battles of terrible bad luck (such as losing a vet Tank to a defending 1HP Longbowman) but also some of awesome good luck.

Last but not least, what happened to you is not so rare... the defender gets an advantage, and if he's lucky, yes, he may beat 5 of your warriors. In fact it's a VERY bad idea attacking with warriors!!! I'd almost say you deserve it

Keep on trying!

That attack with warriors was primarily only a minor skirmish in the early dawn of the game....and besides I'll always intrude into other cities with archers and swordsmen after a coupla hundred more years into the game, though the former is never really able to last for very long and spearmen also only possess the same attack value as classic warriors--attack-wise, they're ultimately equally competent(if even competent at all)

And my jag rushes have never been able to capture more than a coupla cities in the space of a few turns

I'll give you a trick which I found very useful for myself. ;)

Usually the RNG is internal-clock-related. So if you have a critical battle and all seems to go wrong - shutdown the comp let it stay 2-3 minutes and after this try again. Results may be spectacular !!

And BTW - there seems that after a turn or a few the RNG is "reloaded" - so if tou had extremely bad luck at begining of a turn then at the end is possible to hava a enormous luck !!!

Regards

The first also is not random. It is normally something like the nubmer of seconds since midnight, or some other computer-specific number.;)

Here ya go, here's some cheese.

For what its worth, I just had my mighty swordsman with 1 hipoint left take down 4 (count em *FOUR*) attacking horsemen on an open plain. Of course that wasn't luck - but skill! :)
