Ive never seen that before.......

Once or twice. I don't normally get to fighters. My attention span doesn't last that long.

It can happen, its rare though.

Not to thread jack but, I heard an interesting statistic years ago that I have never been able to confirm; B-17s shot down more enemy aircraft over Europe in WWII than any other aircraft. Can anyone confirm this?

I've seen that happen on occaision. You should see what happens if the AI still has fighters trying to intercept stealth bombers. It would probably be better for the AI if the interception didn't happen-in my current game fighters seemed to have about a 1/4 chance of survival, and most of the bombing runs were still successful. I'm sure the RNG was being kind, but it's still pretty satisfying to redline a ground unit and destroy a fighter in the same bombing run.

This is very common for me. That's why I build fighters to bomb with.

I am currently playing as Japan (Diety) in WWII scenario and have shot down
2 Chinese fighters while making bombing runs with Elite Bombers :D .

Certainly not true. The German Me-109 is the pretty clear winner here, at least in part due to its introduction prior to the outbreak of hostilities and the fact that it was still being flown in 1945, but also because it was such a well-designed and versatile airframe. For U.S. forces in Europe, the P-51 holds the title, while in the Pacific the U.S. F-6F could claim it. I'm afraid I don't know enough about the battles on the Russian front, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Yak-3 downed more than any other Russian aircraft, and a great many more than the P-51.

B-17 crews may very well have claimed more kills than any other aircraft though, as each aircraft had five men who were dedicated gunners, three more who had guns in addition to other duties, and a pilot and copilot. Any German plane that went down near a formation of B-17s, no matter the cause, be it a B-17, American fighter, German flak, etc. etc. was likley to be claimed by multiple B-17 aircrews. If bomber crews' claims were accurate, the entire Luftwaffe would have been destroyed in the first few weeks of U.S. bombing operations.

Read up on the first U.S. raid on Schweinfurt if you want to see just how effective the B-17 was in air combat when unescorted.

I suppose in Civ, we should all pretend that bomber units include escorting fighters (either that or their defense stat has to be drastically slashed, and an "escort" command created for fighters), otherwise their casualties to enemy fighters would have to be increased dramatically.

Yes, it seems to happen often. That's why I modded my game to make the fighters a little tougher...
