do most of you have your worker join your first city at the "start" of the game, or is it better to put him to work. I imagine it depends on the scenario. I look forward to hearing your ideas, thanks....

I always have them work on the terrain. Roads first, then mines. I always build nothing but roads and mines, roads and mines. It works out pretty well. You could build an irrigation where the city is working if your obsessed with having it grow. Workers are a precios commodity.

Always set them to work improving tiles.

There is one exception - If you are playing a tiny map and going for a fast finish.

Put him to wrk. That way you can mine for more shields and road for gold. Much better than an early extra citizen.

Only in two rare situations do I even consider joining him. Those would be:

a) a FRF(R W or C)

b) a Jag Rush on a tiny Pangaea.

Even then I'm tempted to scout with him.

I always have my workers work the tiles. The extra production that early will do more than that one extra population point. OTOH joining later in the game in your outer core cities can be quite useful. Especially if you have already railroaded your territory.

I never ever join it into the city. You're just going to need to build a worker right after that to start improving things.

Generally it is a very bad idea....
You want your worker to work....
If you have no worker at the beginning of the game, I call it half lost game...
Worker is must have to put roads and mines and sometimes irrigation.

And apparently, the AI doesn't think the same way as you guys. They are just so willing to sell their precious workers!
