I saw this topic in a thread on multi-player issues and decided what I wanted to say was more appropriate here than there because it concerns the AI:

Has anyone ever lost a city due to AI bribery? I have never seen this, and I wonder if AI's ever bribe each others' cities - this I doubt as well but cannot prove.

However, I HAVE lost units to AI bribery and of course, its not always to a diplomat or spy!!!!, apparently AI military units have big suitcases full of money for emergencies...

yes it happens but is very rare. Also, the AI will not city bribe below Emporer level.Units yes,but cities no.You have to watch for it in the early game

In my GOTM4, Viking bribed one city back right after I conquerred it(it's still under disorder). I actually saw its diplomat moved through the road toward the city, so it was not done by other military units

The AI is pretty smart in deity level. When I conquerred its capital, it had above 1000. But it did not move its capital for 1000 gold. Instead it save the money and buy the city back

sekong, if I take a capital, the palace is destroyed. How would they get their capital back if they retook the city? I (thankfully) have never lost my capital, so I don't know if one is magically rebuilt upon recapture, although it would seem highly unrealistic if that were the case.

Well I must say that it has happen to me - several times, but still it is a very rare thing. And it only happens on Emperor and Deity and then it's only cities that you have conquered from the AI that they will bribe back.

Yes it happens on Emperor level and above. A mean trick is for the AI to dump two units by ship next to a coastal city of yours. You see a stacked unit headed by, say, a knight. The knight acts as an emissary and tries to negotiate with you. Then the second unit, the dip hiding under the knight, comes out to bribe your city.

I've had a city bribed at King level, but again, it was one I had just taken (I was most annoyed as I had just stacked it full of units far more advanced than the AI had developed).

Is it possible to use a spy to prevent bribery?

I don't think it prevents bribery. A spy just reduces the chances of success of industrial espionage, a veteran spy even better, several veteran spies even better than that. All your cities have a price, when they're not democratic, which varies with size, government, the presence of courthouses and the direction the bribing unit is coming from.

In my current game, I've had 3 cities bribed away from me by 3 seperate civs. Luckily, I had another city nearby with a diplomat ready to bribe it back within 1 or 2 turns. That usually happens to me only during my Republican phase when I'm working spoiling actions (grab a city and let them try to take it back by force) on other civs to slow them down. I'll be in Democracy soon anyway and won't have to worry about then.

Yeah, i have been bribed a few times, and let me tell you, it aint no picnic. + ive seen AI bribe AI, so that's a nice view. Even they know how to get down in a cool way.

I always play at Diety level and I've had a few cities bribed by computer Civs, although not often. I have also had units bribed by computer Civs when playing as a Democracy - I'm sure that's a big CHEAT on the part of the AI.

You must be mistaken. I've played hundreds of hours at Deity level--most of them under democracy--and it's never happened.

I can assure you Mr Bond that it has. The first time (it's happened, from memory, twice) I couldn't believe it and after checking I was operating under democracy and referring back to the manual I proceeded to accuse the computer of cheating - fat lot of good it did me.
I know this is a bit off the topic but another unusual occurrence happened years ago whilst playing the original Civ game. I had played for years without ever seeing a computer controlled Civ build an Aircraft carrier and then whilst playing on a world map the Zulus decided to build a Carrier - first and last time I ever saw it.
If the units bribed under Democracy happens to me again I'll save the game and post it.

I have been bribed once, in a King game, where I had just bribed Viroconium from the Romans but they bribed it back and launched a full-scale attack on me - I didn't survive

forever!!

Sometimes I have seen the AI bribe a unit from me. But not a City yet.

In Civ 1 though.....I would sometimes get AI cities because they envied my empire. A message came up and said, "Talxauuan (Some Aztec City) Envies the great American Civilization and decides to join them." Or something to that effect. (I mean it was like 4 or 5 years ago.) It happened 2 or 3 times in that game but never again. Anyone seen that before

Background: In this game I was maximizing my pop. Got it up to 86 million. My highest in Civ 1 or Civ 2. The Aztecs ruled some of North and South America and I had cities everywhere else. They didn't have the highest standard of living

and that could explain it. But anyway....

So, CornMaster, did you have the ability to reject the city, or were you stuck with them? I wonder if the 'cultural power' thing in Civ3 will have a return of such events?

some little inaccuracies about civ2 on this thread.

1. Democracy cities can never be bribed...I've played thousands of hours of civ2 and IT have not ever happened to a civ.

2. To prevent diplos bribing units...put in a stack of two or more.

3. spies can counter-espionage inside cities, thus can foil enemy spy actions in cities and they increase the cost.

4. Dude who said A.I bribed their capital back after losing it...hmm surely they'd lose that 1000 gold you said they had when you invaded their capital...ho-hum.
