Jumpstarting our Partcipation levels

I wonder how much a 7th straight regular Epic game would cut participation.

If the newbies are concerned, why don't they post instead of PMing one person? The only way to change the polls are to vote. And so far, I don't see these 'potential newbies'. Please show evidence Strider.

Possibly they are afraid to voice their opinions. I dont beleve a 7th Straight regular epic game would not cut participation as big as you think. You joined the demogame around DG5 IIRC, so you only been through 2 regular epic games.

Frankly I'm getting quite tired of childish "play it my way or I'll take my marbles home" comments. We should not base our decisions on such statements, we should each vote for the option that is closest to the game we want to play, or the option we think is best for the general public

Making a personal decision to not play is OK. I for one will definitely miss everyone who walks and wish they would stay, but there isn't much, or really anything, to be done about it.

I *did* lurk part of DG3 and DG4 (remember Deux Riviers and Groton? ;) ).

DaveShack, I couldn't agree more. Base our decisions on the current situation, not 'what might be'.

I just dont feel the need for the Epic supporters to be around in a 5CC game. They will feel out of place because they are used to playing a certan game style. I have personaly played a 5CC and enjoyed it, but I felt that its not appropreate for a demogame enviornment because we are restricting ourselves to ony 5 cities and thus would only stunt our growth as a civilization. I feel that the Demogame should not be restricted to the number of cities we should have and still keep it an open ended game free of city restricted variants. If there can be a place for an epic supporter in a 5CC variant, then I would consider staying. Right now I am confused because I am being bombarded by both sides on "Oh the 5CC would bring changes" or "The 5CC would drive away people". What I need to get this confusion and get back to the mindset that this is a game, is "where can an epic supporter who played an epic 5CC game and liked it can fit in?". Right now as an epic supporter, I feel like a minority and that no one would realy consider my options.

Now that's the kind of post we need to see. :D

First we need to remember that we're playing 5BC and not 5CC. We're building 5 cities and keeping approximately 7. The only victory condition we can't go for is domination. How does this change demogame play? The decisions actually become more complex, which means that all players will have a lot more to look at.

  • Because we have so few cities to settle, it actually becomes harder to decide when and where to settle! Should we wait for resources to appear, or just build for production and get resources another way?
  • Build density -- should we still build close for 12 tiles per city, or space out so that every city has all 21 tiles to work with?
  • Military -- should we go for an early rush to incapacitate a close neighbor, or play it safe? Later, should we knock out the strongest competition or leave them and run a risk of losing a space race or culture battle?
  • Trade -- we might have to be even smarter about what and when to trade. Especially important if we are resource poor.
  • Science -- different choices because we may have an urgent need for a stronger defender, stronger attacker, or map knowledge of resources.
  • Wonders -- to my surprise, it was actually easier to get wonders in a 5CC. Not building settlers means higher populations and thus higher shield production.
  • Captured cities -- do we use one of our precious allocation to keep this one, or raze it and keep another? Do we abandon a city so we can keep a different one?

The list goes on and on. How can you participate?

  • We still need discussions, on even more issues than normal
  • We start with 5 governors
  • The advisor positions are at least similar, maybe identical to a normal game (except for shfits in power)
  • We want to make the game itself less tedious so that there are more roleplay opportunities. The old-timers are often the best at role-play, so why not stay and excell at what you're good at. :D

Excuse my ignorance, but what does the "B" in 5BC stand for?

1. Limitations on city would mean that we would have to rely on pure luck to get a stratigic resource or use of colonies (Defense is explained more in the military section.
2. This would have to depend how much land we have at first, if we have enough, then we can do eather or. If we are in a cramped area, then we would be forced to build in a ICS manner.
3. I am going to add another thing to the military, which is added support needed for colonial defenses. Any Civ that we are at war with would freely waltz right into our colony and destroy it, same with barbarians. Also we would have to ensure that no AI civ would settle near or close to the colonly or risk losing it within the AI's bounderies.
4 & 5. We would have to be srewed traders in this game and only monopolies would help.
6. No wonder when I am forced in a 5CC setting when playing Rhye's civ mod that I tend to build wonders quickly :hmm:. So I have tried a 5CC without knowing it .
7. The hard part would be whether or not to raze a city if it has a wonder that we hold value to

My main consern would be discrimination and the glass ceilings. Before I go on, I should explain what I mean by the glass ceiling. A glass ceiling would refer to barriers which prevents advancements of a qualified (or in the demogame case, interested). With that put assided an explained.
One such example that Regentman placed it "No one would vote for me if I advocated razing fourteen of our cities, would they?" meaning that, Hypotheticly if we did chose to go Epic and a 5CC supporter ran for office, no one would vote for him. I am afraid (Unless I totaly assimulate into the 5CC culture) that I would be discriminated because I held a support for an epic game in the past when in reality I have somewhat assimulated into the 5CC culture while keeping ties with the epic game (Hense how I began to develop a moderate possition in the issue).

I know that I do wish to retire into a governorship for the majority of the Demogame (Some of us are returning back to college :p), and the Role playing does make it more attractive to make it feel that I have a senatorial possition.

5BC stands for 5 built cities

look, if Epic won, do you think i would leave because of it? no. i would accept the fact we are playing a normal Epic game and still participate. i'd still run in elections and try to contribute as best i can. there is no reason why you should leave because you were a Epic supporter, if we play a 5BCC game. you can still run in elections and participate. also, if someone was still running for office as a Epic supporter in a 5BCC game, then that [person would just be in denial. their option lost, and now they would be trying to change stuff midgame. accept the result either way, like i will, and just play the damn game.

Have you ever played a 5CC ALL the way through? I play a 1CC on Regent and had no problems...

In a regular game, 5 cities account for most of your shields / commerce (little corruption).

I encourage you to read this 5CC guide by Charis (!!).

I felt that you did not have to be blunt about it cause I am going to accept the results anyway and not pack my marbles and move on, no need to get all angist on me :(.

(I would leave the DG if RL events does something that will adversely effect my time in the demogame does force me to pack my marbles since I have no control over the situation)
