I'm wondering... why are the reasons that people play Civ1? Im not insulting this game but Im just asking? is it Comp speed? is it gameplay?

CivDOS has the greatest feeling of all the civ games.
Unfortunately the diplomacy system is seriously buggy.

CivNET might be the best for multiplayer because Civ1 games are much shorter than Civ2/Civ3 games.

CivDOS is the game which brought me to civ so I'd play it if I didn't have too good computer:D

It reminds me of simpler times :)

Not to mention battleships behind city walls. They could get any attacking ground forces into pieces. :D

Nostalgia, for me. I've been playing the Civ games since the first one came out. Even though I've upgraded with each new version that comes out, I still like to go back to the original Civ now and then just to remember the old days. There aren't enough civs, the diplomacy sucks, and it's not nearly customizable enough . . . but like Alice said, it reminds me of simpler times. :)

Why play checkers when you could play chess?

well, sometimes you just want a simpler, faster game to play. One you can win, but still a challenge to do well on, or beat your last best score. I like the square grid, rather than the diagonal view of the later civ games, and its easy to tell what the units are, compared to CIv 3 conquests, and what they can do. Which ones move two, and which one has the enslave ability, etc.

Civ2 I rarely if ever come back to.

However, I'll fire up civ from time to time. There's just something about this game. . . the magic is still there.

Civ is a game where you feel you can completely control circumstances. Planning is so important in this game, especially in the highest difficulty. I don't know about the rest of you, but the best feeling I ever had was when I scored over 150 percent with Emperor difficulty at the end of the game. My crowning achievement. :)

Even though this little 2.6 MB gem was made over 10 years ago... It's the greatest. Screw Age of Empires! WHO'S WITH ME??

Though I'm hella into retro games.... no.

There is a boundary that can be surpassed. Syndicate is a much superior game to Syndicate Wars although SW has a lot of fun features Syndicate doesn't.

But Civ3 vs Civ1, there's just no contest, Civ3 wins. Civ3 vs Civ2, Civ3 wins. Though I do miss the nostalgia of Civ2, the way the city view was, and most of all THE WORLD WAR II SCENARIO. Damn that ruled.

I love Civ 1 because it is a good game. Period. Forget the innovation, the fun simplicity, and the Almighty Sid. If you bought this game with no knowledge of any such game, you would still love it. Civ 1 Rocks, end of story.

Yup, that's it. Although I enjoyed Civ 2 and - due to Conquests - now finally enjoy Civ 3 I still start DOSBox from time to time to play a round of the "real Civ".

For all its innovation, there are also those graphic details: The waves hitting the shores, water ripples in the rivers, those cute eyes of knight's horses and the frigates.
Also - call me a fanatical nostalgic - I still like this city screen the most.

And - it is simply one of those ten great computer games that made history. Simple like that.

Hmm PC:

Intel Pentium IV 3.0 GHZ
Seagate 160 GB
512 MB DDR PC3200 RAM (Dual Channel 2x@256)
Ati Radeon 9800 PRO

Civilization is so f*cking good compared to most of the new games.
I Like Playing Civ 2, 3, Far Cry or Colin McRae 4, but Civilization I gives me an amazing feeling of gameplay

My computer can't handle the other games. I could download civ. So I did, and NO matter how many times I play it, it is different. I try different govs, strategies, and countries and I have fun. I compete for scores against my brother. It is just cool.
