Just Bought Civ, Bugs and Glitches Make Game Unplayable

Longtime Civ fan, but finally got around to getting Civ 5...My computer can handle the game easily, but the glitches I'm getting make the game totally unplayable.

For starters, I cannot load DX10/11, I have to start the game in DX9 (hopefully that's the root of all my problems). Then, when starting in DX9, the menu options on startup are either invisible or glitched out; "Game Options" never appears, and clicking on it freezes the game. When I go to "setup game" there is a large pink box where I'm sure there should be some sort of image. I can alter most settings (Map size, difficulty), but I cannot alter the Civilization I want to play as. Clicking on that freezes the game. I can do the "Play Random Game" option and it will load the game as if nothing is wrong, but in game I can't do simple tasks like tell my city to build something. If I click on "worker" or "monument", it simply won't work. The only thing I can do is move my warrior around and take in the fresh scenery.

Anybody have any ideas? I've downloaded the latest patches and I can post computer specs if necessary, but I've played Crysis on high settings so I don't see why Civ 5 would be a problem.

Please post your specs, because this sounds really like if your machine was to weak. And Crysis is for today really not anymore a high end game ;).

:( That used to be quite the benchmark though.

Anyway, relevant specs are as follows

AMD Phenom X4 9950 Quad Core Processor 2.60GHz
4GB DDR3
GeForce 9800 GT Video Card - 1024MB GDDR3
DX11, Windows 7 Home 64-bit

From everything I've seen about the game, it should be more than enough...Downloaded all the latest video card drivers, patches for game, did fresh installs, etc. Not sure what's up.

The graphics card is on the lower end of the specs, so it's not really strong.
It additionally answers the problem why you can't load DX10/11: That card is not capable of DX10 or 11.

But the card should at least be sufficient. How are the graphics settings? Don't set leaders to high (only works with DX11), and turn down everything else. Maybe it works then better.

In game everything looks crisp and sharp. I played around with the graphics settings in notepad (since I cannot access them in game) and turned things to low, but nothing came of it. The game loads quickly, there's no lag, etc. but again, I can't even get more than a few moves in considering I can't tell my cities to build anything. I've tried opening it in windowed mode, played around with resolution, to no avail.

Thanks for the help though, appreciate it...and thanks for the heads up about the graphics card/dx levels, at least that part makes sense.

Figure my next step is trying an install on a friends computer, seeing if there are any issues. If nothing else, it will give me a bit more info. Thanks again.
