So I was doing pretty well. I had a substantial lead in tech and culture and the game was in the mid-1990's. It was also kinda...well, slow. It was me and 3 other civs, the Iriquois, Aztecs, and Russians. So I took it upon myself to pick a fight with the Iriquois next door. They and the Aztecs with whom they had a mutual protection pact, responded with spearmen and mounted warriors while my tanks were razing about two of their cities per turn. After 4 turns my people got war-weary and so I sued for peace with both tribes. In the process, a leader was created! I took it to Philidelphia and had it finish United Nations for me. Next turn, I got a window asking if I wanted to vote for UN president, innocently I agreed and everybody voted for Catherine the Great! I lost! Just like that? Yer kidding? Nope, it was true, I'd spent a total of 14 hours playing just to screw up and let 'em vote me out, when I probably would've won a cultural victory in regulation time. Ah well, it was still a blast. I won't make the same mistake next time.

Where there are several things to prevent this. First save the game time from time. Also uncheck that victory condition.

Also, If you break peace treaties and don't honor mutual pact agreements, this will happen.

It's very cool how one decision changes the outcome of your civ and sometimes the whole world in both good and bad ways.

Man, that really sucks. Civ losses are always tougher to take when you lose to a girl.

Well, they are genetically superior to us males!!

I had a similar experience. Playing the Americans, I had peacefully amassed nearly half the world's population and territory by 2010 or so, through expansion and cultural assmilation of other cities. I stayed out of wars along the way, until I was attacked by the Iriquois.

Since this was my first game, and I was unsure how strong the attack would be, I quickly lined up military alliances with several other countries to get them to attack the Iriquois. But before 20 turns were over--when I guess most agreements can expire without incident--I sued for peace, having pushed back the Iriquios and watching my citizens start to riot from war-weariness. My one-time partners, I noted, were mad, though not mad enough to refuse to talk or trade.

Once the Iriquois ended the war with the other countries, I signed a mutual protection pact with the Zulus to try and deter another war. The Iriquois and Zulus soon got into it, and I was in another war. Again, after I took some Iriquois cities and rioting began in my own cities, I got out. But since my pact with the Zulus had not expired, I was pushed back into the war the very next turn. (I ended up turning up my luxury tax for a while to keep the people happy.)

After that finally died down, one of my captured cities revolted back to the Iriquois. Assuming this to be a declaration of war by the Iriquois, I then proceeded to wipe them off of the continent (though a few lingered elsewhere.)

The result? When the UN came along, I was beaten in 4-3 vote by the French. Even the Zulu voted against me! 14+ hours, down the drain. Actually, it was kind of fun to have an unpredictable end, after all those Civ 2 games where you slog on to the finish line.

then what did you expect???? that they would vote for that nice mister who had been trashing 2 of the 3 other civs on the planet????

perhaps they liked the english better :D :D :D

besides, don't use the UN when you are not absolutely sure if it will come out in your favor...

i do miss one thing though... you can't trade/request votes, and pplz don't have votes according to their population like in SMAC... a shame.

If you haven't started a new game, you can go back and load your auto save right before the U.N. fiasco for your civ.
