Playing civ1 for many many years, I was devasted when I bought my new computer to find out that civ1 does not work under it (although I tried all your suggestion, it only worked once or twice...)

So, I decided to download winciv (is there a legal way to get it?) and I was amazed to find out that:

1. Graphics are much, much worse than in the original dos civ (they look, well, grainy. where is the little cute settler icon?)
2. One can not buy the things the city produce (huh? why?)
3. Path finding algorithm was not improved.
4. There is no auto production for the city.
5. No auto focus on the unit currently active.

What microprose were thinking?

Ignore this thread, I just wanted to release some steam.

Civilization for DOS will work on any PC-compatible computer. Here's how:

You computer uses some operating system that is not compatible with Civilization, right? The solution is get a copy of DOS and use it. Find someone you know who has a DOS computer, and bring a couple of blank 3.5" floppy disks. Use their computer to a DOS boot disk (or if you require other stuff for DOS, you might need two disks, doesn't hurt to have a second). Now, as long as you have Civ for DOS on your harddrive, just pop in the 3.5" floppy that has DOS on it and get into DOS. You can even set your autoexec.bat so that it automatically boots civ off your harddrive for you.

Now lets say you pop the disk in but it doesn't boot from it. You need to change your BIOS settings so that it will. If you don't know how to do this, ask someone who knows to do it for you.

If, for some reason, you can't get it to run off of your harddrive, then you will need to get 2 more disks (make sure they are 1.44MB capacity this time) and put civilization on these disks. The game does not require a hard drive and was designed to run from two disks like this. If you get to this stage, you will need to find out which files go on which disk. If you still have your original disks, then it's easy. Otherwise, I can't help you'll have to ask around because my original disks are ruined from old age. But don't worry because you shouldn't need them; it should just run from your hard drive. Good luck! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>
