I've not been playing this game long, and I have a question. when I start playing the 'Load Scenario' or Tutorial, as the greeks, I get 10 King Alexanders, which appear to be elvis presley on the screen. Can anybody please tell what these are?

You could be playing a scenario, but I would suggest to just start a new game. Scenarios are specialized games and may have specialzed rules. If you are starting, learn the basic game and then go back to the scenarios.

Other than that, I think the problem is in game setup. In the second start up screen, the one that asks you which civ you want to be, the Regicide or Mass Regicide option has been selected (the words will be in blue text). The difference is this. In Regicide you don't want your King unit to be captured or killed or you lose the game, like in chess. In Mass Regicide you have 9 Kings to lose.

If you selected all the options in that section, you are apt to have a very quick game. Elimination means that when you lose a city your entire civliization is destroyed.

I'm not going to tell you how to set up your game, but I will share the settings I use.

  • Allow Domination Victory = Yes (Text is Blue)
  • Allow Conquest Vicotory = Yes
  • Allow Diplomatic Victory = Yes
  • Allow Space Ship Victory = Yes
  • Allow Cultural Victory = Yes
  • Allow Wonder Victory = No
  • Culturally Linked Start Locations = No
  • Respawn AI Players = No
  • Perserve Random Seed = Yes
  • Acclerated Production = No
  • Elimination = No
  • Regicide = No
  • Mass Regicide = No
  • Victory Point Scoring = Yes
  • Supply Shipments = No
  • Allow Cultural Conversions = Yes
  • Reverse Capture the Flag = No
  • Allow Scientifc Leaders = Yes

Let me explain some of the settings and what they mean.

Wonder Victory Game ends when the last Great Wonder is built, by you or the AI. The first time I won this way I was not expecting it and did not want it. I was upset. :D

Culturally Linked Starting Locations Each civ is part of a culture group. When this is set to Yes, the neighboring civs are predetermined, based on the culture group your selected civ is in. That means, everytime you play as Rome, your neighbors will be Carthage, Greece and Egypt. Set to No and you could be next to Russia, China and Maya. You won't know who your neighbors are until you meet them.

Respawn AI Players In certain conditions you could kill the Vikings very early, see the pop up screen that says they are dead, and then later have them reappear in the game. I want them to stay dead.

Preserve Random Seed When set to Yes, the string of random numbers the game generates to determine battle results and other things is saved when the game is saved. If set to No, you can have a battle, and if you don't like the results, reload the game, fight that same battle and expect to get different results.

Accelerated Production You build things faster, but not any smarter. And so does the AI. I don't like it.

Elimation, Regicide, Mass Regicide, and Reverse Capture the Flag These settings are for human vs human games and not generally used when it is you vs the AI.

Victory Point Scoring This is set at 100,000 VPs and when you reach it the game ends. The highest known score is 85,000 in an unmodded game. If you can win this way you have done very, very well.

Supply Shipments I think this is a modding feature and may not appear in your game.

Allow Cultural Conversion Sometimes your cities will defect to another civ with more/better/stronger culture than you. And sometimes the AI cities will decide to become part of your team, too. My personal best is having 3 cities flip to me in one game.

Allow Scientific Leaders These guys, if they appear, can rush Great Wonders, which is nice.

Oh,

 :woohoo:

Today is Elvis' birthday and all King units show up as Elvis on his birthday.

Thanks very much, that was a great help. I was following the instructions in one of the walkthroughs, which is why I used a scenario rather than a straight game. I'll use your settings. Thanks again Bob.
I didn't realise that it was Elvis's birthday! thanks Pounder

I believe there is a bug in the game so that you only get the "American" culture group no matter which civ you choose with this option ticked. Much safer not to get into that :mischief:
