What are you supposed to do with all of these apostles? Some you can kill for the relic and others to convert a couple barbs but the rest? Is there some reason they get so many?

I built the Mont St Michel, and gave them all martyr upgrade. Then send them into 'enemy' territory to get killed and get myself some relics. Once I had too many, I just delete them for cash.

Delete for cash.

I believe the idea is that you want to spread the religion to your other cities, to access that religion's abilities (as per Kongo UA). The only problem is most religious abilities are tied to Holy Sites and Missionaries (which Kongo can't build) or are just plain weak. I'm never excited to get a religion when I found it, let alone as the Kongo.

I havent tried it myself yet but can you get gold for disbanding? It works for great people!
Also i dont understand the point of this religious convert thing... Lots of civs in the game didnt found their own religion. The only african leader is a suck up loves his colonizers kinda guy? Really? Id Rather play Shaka to be honest! :) more fierce representation.

I was wondering the same.

So far I'm just stacking them and waiting for the Mont St Michel.

I don't think you can delete apostles for cash like you can with other units.

I may be misremembering, but playing as the Kongo I seem to remember getting cash when I deleted my Apostles. Not necessarily a huge amount, but free money is free money.

The Kongo's apostles seem mostly useless since most of all AI religion beliefs are focused on dealing with faith and building faith is very difficult as Kongo. Will have to check if they can be sold. I seem to only get one apostle with martyr promotion out of 6 or 7 spawned.

Just checked: cannot sell for cash. I use them as scouts now as they don't require open borders from the AI.

It's a bit niche but Kongo + Mont St Michael, as mentioned above, makes for a very powerful civ. Sacrifice your apostles to theological combat and let the relics come rolling in. Managed to win a culture victory by about 1950 this way.

Many of them do, but definitely not all. This actually makes the apostles more useful, as you can use them to push your cities towards following religions with beliefs that don't require holy sites.

The problem is Kongo can only hold 7 Relics total

Anyone else can hold at least 1/city

One thing I found these apostle useful for, before I discovered Mont St. Michel, is to send them exploring the world. They are not stopped by any borders. Found quite a few hidden goody huts this way.

1) Convert barbs is my fav, so many free units
2) Medic - before medics come into play - Ngao Mpeba is regarded as a weak unit, but when you combine them with early medic it is an apocalypse for enemy with their resistance to crossbows
3) Relics, but limited slots :(
----
4) Eliminate 75% pressure + triple strength - manipulating religion of yours / oppnent --> +4 strength card to use when fighting different religion, crusade, defender of faith etc, speading religion you prefer - those without buffs to shrines and holy sites
5) 100 gold upon cinversion - simple cash and a free explorer :p
