Jecrell: Great job! I will most likely have a number of suggestions, but I haven't had a chance to look through everything yet (I don't have Civ4 yet, so I have to resort to opening up the xml files and looking through by hand). I did notice right off the bat some inconsistencies in romanization. For the most part you are using the traditional McCune-Resichauer system (although "Wang Geon" is the new Korean government system, but I suggested that, so sorry for confusing you), but there is some confusion in the vowels (for example, the "o" in "Wang Kon" is the same vowel sound as the "u" in Queen Jinsung, so they should be the same letter).

Personally, I would recommend using the new government system because it does not rely on diacritical marks like the McCune Reischauer system. The English vowel "o," for example, can have two different sounds in M-R, depending on the presence of the diacritical. In the new government system, these are distinguished as "o" and "eo." The new government system also eliminates the need for apostrophes to indicate aspirate consonants (e.g., P'yongyang). In a word, it's much cleaner looking (and more accurate when you don't have access to diacriticals).

Other things I noticed: Ch'ongfu is not a Korean city name, it is a Chinese city name. And just going by the screenshot of the description for the Korean Empire, your history makes it sound as if Wang Geon unified the Three Kingdoms, but it's a bit more complicated than that. I know the civ descriptions can't be that long, but a more historically accurate description of the same length could probably be written.

I should point out that I think you've done a tremendous job with your research, and my criticisms are meant to be constructive, not destructive. If you'd like my input on the civilization, I'll take a closer look at all the info and send you a more detailed set of suggestions.

I can't thank you enough for your criticisms Suho. I knew there would be inconsistency since I, personally, do not know the extent of these translation systems. For a while I was confused on who was who because of these different styles of writing.

As for the Civilization description and the city names. I will say that this is not original material, but rather, borrowed from Civilization III. Also the actual descriptions of the leaders are from http://www.Wikipedia.org

If you'd be interested in presenting the proper romanization, I'd be more than happy to implement it into the next version.

Yeah, I think that's the major problem right now. I did take a quick look through all the text, and I realized right away that you drew from different sources, mainly because of the marked differences in writing styles. The entry for Wang Geon, for example, was obviously written by a non-native English speaker.

If you'd be interested in presenting the proper romanization, I'd be more than happy to implement it into the next version.

Indeed. Not only is it a sore point with me (being a translator), but, as you said, the differing romanizations could easily confuse people. If you don't mind, I would like to overhaul all of the text entries (some need more overhauling than others--the entry on King Sejong is pretty good as it is, I think), not only unifying the romanization but hopefully making the text easier to understand. Even though this is my field of study and I'm all for more information, I think there is just too much information in some of the civpedia entries.

This is something I want to do personally, understand. If you'd prefer that I simply unify the romanization, I can do that. Or I can give you my versions of the files, and then you can decide what to do with them. These are just suggestions, not demands. I just want to do what I can to help. :)

Oh, and this won't be done right away. I'm a bit on the busy side these days, but I will put it in my build queue and get to it as soon as possible.

It is completely appropriate to propose these changes, and I do not find it offensive or intrusive in my projects to have outside help and sources. I knew that same feeling of intrusion when I first started making suggestions/proposed changes to others modifications. However, the more people accepted my behavior the more I felt the need to contribute to various projects. I feel that by doing so, I am helping people. Perhaps I am saving them some time and improving the mod community. And I hope by doing this you may feel the same. :)

Feel free to present your ideas/changes however you see fit. And take all the time you need.

Ah, I'm glad you feel that way. You seem to know exactly how I'm feeling.

Should I post my suggestions and ideas in this thread? For example, if I rewrite some of the texts, should I post the whole text here, or should I just send that to you?

I'd prefer if you sent the suggestions/ideas to my personal email address.

I'll go through them and see what can be done as soon as I get them. :)

Sure thing. I'll send them along as I get them done, probably some time next week (busy weekend ahead).

[Edit: oh, by the way, when I was playing the demo I noticed that the units respond in their national language when you click on them. What sounds files are you using for the Korean civilization?]

I'm impressed with both of the civs you've done so far Jacrell. Both have been added to my game.

Love the new color and the sounds. Wheat simply kicks butt as a color after seeing all of the bles and reds.

But I have to wonder about the Kobukson. Movement of 2 for a UU is simply not good. I upped it to 4 in my game so it's worth building.

The main reason behind that is because it's available early on (one tech earlier). I don't like the idea of someone circumnavigating the globe earlier than everyone else every time because of the number of moves. But if you think about it, if you do circumnavigate the globe first as Korea, your naval ships will increase in one move point.

But you are right -- the Korean naval ship isn't exactly a trump card or "powerful" UU. What other benefits could be appended?

And I appreciate all the comments everyone. But I'm running out of Civilizations to create really -- everyone else seems to be doing an excellent job at beating me to the punch. :)

Actually I overlooked the voice sounds entirely. Or I don't remember what I actually did there (I think I left the voices as Chinese). The upside to this is that I'm planning on appending some kind original voices to this Civilization sometime in the near future.

Since I've never tried to circumnavigate the globe I guess I never thought of that. I also know nothing about Korea so i have no idea what else would be a better UU. The one in Civ3 was awesome. :)

Keep up the good work. Love your civs.

Wonderful job, Jecrell- in my first attempt as the Koreans, I tried my first higher-difficulty-level game and was smushed off the face of the Terra before I was able to build my first Kobukson, but I'll try again tonight. I'm going for a cultural victory over the Mongols, Chinese, Japanese, Russians and Americans ;) .

Hate to be the devil's advocate, but aren't you breaking some copyright laws putting a Civ3 leaderhead up for all to download?

As much as someone putting up a screenshot of the game on their website.
All I did was go in Civ III and take a nice screenshot -- stretch it up and place it as the leaderhead. No big woop. If anyone official wants it taken out I'd have no problem with that, but I havn't heard anything like that yet.

This would be a major issue if I was selling the modification, because selling another artist's work for profit is just plain illegal. But I don't believe I am.

Hopefully CivArmy can get to Wang Geon later on (and maybe Sejong too). :)
