My friend and I are playing a game over the net. I have DSL, but he has 56k. The game lags pretty bad sometimes, especially when we get later into the game and he has lots of stuff, it takes a LONG TIME for him to transmit the data to me. Are there any options we can turn on/off to help fix this?

Thanks,

Brian

make sure nobody's uploading off you with anyform of file sharing program, hes not browsing the internet, remove all things such as high consul, help. Mostly the problems I've experienced were due to someone uploading or someone browsing the internet, other things not related to civ which eat up bandwidth

hmm... would that apply to me? Since I'm on DSL? My turns never lag.. but he'll like... move a unit, and it will have to take time to move, then he gets his next move. It's horrible.

anyone uploading off either of your connections, 56 or dsl.

Its one solution that i've used for lags. How far is your friend from you? Another country, region or city?

well distance is sometimes a problem. Anyways you can use the DOS console to do a ping of your friend (ping [your friends ip address here]) example "ping 63.34.44.33" and see the number that shows up. If its somewhere around 150 - 400 its pretty good, anything higher than that and its a connection problem, in 1 being the 56 modem.

Just try not to do any downloads and uploads during a game and see how it goes from there.
