Lack of Civ I Sites? We need more!

Hey Good People,

There just seems to be a gross absence of Civilization I sites on the net and I for one can't take it anymore. I've been working on putting my site together for all versions of civ and of course, my first love, the original Civilization. I've made some improvements based on some suggestions others have given -- but I want to have original Civ fans give me ideas about what this site should include. My mission is simple: archive files about the game and its history and offer related news no one else spends much time with.

But I get the feeling from some who have contacted me already that there is an opportunity here to build a few fan related portions into the site. Maybe you could take a look at it and tell me what you think:

Civilization Partisans Hideout

Yes, I am still writing the pages (please do not email or post here and say the first thing I could do is finish the site -- the point is to fix it BEFORE I finish the pages). I've incorporated FreeCiv, FreeCol and will be posting strategies and so forth. I suppose my question is what is it about the original game that everyone is looking for from this kind of site? Players obviously like GOTM's -- but also scenarios. Could I have some kind of competition for creating utilities that make scenarios or maps for Civ I? Should I offer some kind of hall of fame or award for high scores? These seem very time consuming but also repetitive for what is offered here too. I want the Civ I pages to be complete but have what fans want.

I really want to fill in the gaps.

Thanks to everyone for their help,

One small correction. CivDos uses .map and .sve files. CivWin uses a single .sav file.

oh ya, nova...that's right!

See...that's what I'm talking about...I need to know little details like that.

if you would check THiS (here we are) forum out carefully
you would have found all answers to all questions.
there is nothing 'new' about civ 1, civDOS, Civilization for DOS, Sid Meier's Civilization,
generations of civ 1 players didn't discuss now at least the third or 100s time.

the only (and best) remarkable NEW things are
- the birth of an handy EDiTOR like TERRAFORM for CivDOS in the games' ~14th year
and
- the GOTM forum for CivDOS games at CFC Forum.

Hello Folks,

(I replied to this earlier but for whatever reason the post didn't stick).

Let me first thank Goldberg for his outstanding effort and help. These
links of course will serve well, with proper credit to Goldberg for
researching them. I don't know of any single website outside this forum
that would offer this much about Civ I and I hope to make it happen. The
point of this thread is to generate as much fan participation as possible.

I've discussed the website with many of my offline friends, who have
suggested to me (and I agree) that Fans really must have a hand in the
material offered at CPH. This project is essentially a site for fans anyway
and I hope to share it with everyone who has the same enjoyment for Civ I
as I do.

One of the issues that the site can probably help with would be to get some
upcoming programmers involved with various projects that the fans would
like to see happen. I know that I for one would like to see more scenario
tools for Civ I -- if you've ever made mods for Civ II, you would know that
Carl's CivTweak is a great utility and something like that would be
fantastic for Civ I.

We could even advertise on some of the tech sites, and I have seen this
done before. I would even be willing to fund some of the projects if there
were enough fans involved. Things like this can happen with fan support
and will happen if there is enough interest generated. I would prefer to
see the earlier versions of Civ continue to be developed mostly because
they are still fun to play and their system requirements are low.

I will start a new thread for projects that fans would like to see happen
but I would also like to see other comments and advice about what you would
like to see in a new Civ I site such as design, content, downloads, news,
GOTM, etc. What I am really interested in are NEW ideas from the Fans.
Obviously, there isn't much new about Civ I that you have not already talked
about -- but something new that you would like to see happen that no one else has come up with already on a site. Then again, I am still interested in
anything that might generate more interest in Civ I for everyone so go
ahead and include any idea.

Thanks again for your help. Remember, now is your chance to have the kind
of Civ I site and resources that you want.
