Ok, I started playing over the Internet with a friend of mine from ACROSS THE STREET, just across the street. We both have ADSL, and we play by ourselves with AI...

why is it that we have OVER 2000 PING?!!?! I thought ping was the time the computer needs to send a message to the other computer.. I mean.. we are RIGHT next door to eachother! how is this possible?

we have both tried hosting and both times its laggy!

Please, how is this possible?

Even though you are right across the street, you are playing thru Gamespy. Firaxis uses Gamespy. They have never been known for good multiplayer games. Sorry it won't go faster for you, but that's the way it is. If you are right across the street, I suggest you do what I do. One of you take your computer over to the other guy's house and hook up to a hub. It's fast, no lag whatsoever, and you can laugh in your friend's face when you stomp him!

Well, GameSpy aside...

Just because you're next door, it doesn't mean the route is direct. Both computers are sending data to the DSL host, which is then sending the data off over the internet. The route can be as long or even longer than playing someone in another city or state.

It just depends on the route.

There's no real reason to think your connection will be direct just because you're geographically close together.

Anyway...

How is Direct IP done?.. it's never really worked for me. Me and my friend can do games through the lobby just fine, but Direct IP fails..
