Land-Based Transport Units: Possible?

I am looking for a way to create a land-based transport unit, such as military transport, bus, or dogsled that could carry other units across land. Has anyone discovered a way to do this in C3C? :)

Luthor,
Thanks for the suggestion. The Portugese Civil War Mod looks interesting, and the units have some unusual capabilities. I wasn't able to tell whether the mod has real land transports, but I did email the creator of the mod. I'll let you know if I find a way to do this. Thanks again!

Yes, it is possible, I have done it myself. However, I am at school right now, and it was a while since I modded this in, so I don't know if I can explain it. But I believe you simply select the transport capacity you want in the editor. And you might want to select "transports foot units only" flag, but that depends on what you want. If I am incorrect with any of this, please, someone correct me.

Hi Doc Tsiolkovski,

Thank you for replying. Double your Pleasure is a lot of fun, BTW. It gave me the inspiration to slog through all the (not always fun) graphics work needed for these mods.

I have tried various permutations in the editor, allowing trans. capacity of 1-3 units, always without success. I have not been able to load units into the land transport unit. I have tried load alone, load and unload together, and unload alone, as well as some other features. I am stuck.

Do I have to do something like start out making a naval transport and then turn this into an amphibious wheeled unit that will only move on land? I would be grateful for any specific guidance you would like to give.

Thanks again for your reply.

Take a looks at the Helicopter. It is ready-made transport unit, except its mode of movement is air-unit-based, i.e. it has the "immobile" flag and the "re-base" ability. You simply need to remove those air-unit movement flags, and replace them with the same flags and values that you see on land units to get a land-based transport.

SJ Frank and Doc Tsiolkovski,

Thank you for this advice! I will give it a try and I'll let you know if it works.

I am still trying various things, but no success so far. I looked at the helicopter, saw that it has an Air Transport flag. I tried operating a truck as air transport. This works, except trucks can fly over water in this mode. I tried operating a truck as an army. No go - have to have the proper techs for Army creation before creating a truck in that mode. I have tried several other things. Is there anyone out there who has actually created a ground transport unit and confirmed that it works?

This should work.
Transport capacity = obvious
Capture = better check it; if that flag is missing, some odd things are possible

As you can see, there is no AI strategy available. And there is no workaround possible. That's why I abstain from such a unit. :)

Doc Tsiolkovski,

Thank you so much for taking time to give this very detailed, graphic response. Using the edit above, I am not yet able to get the Land Transport to actually load anything. I edited as you showed, built the unit in the normal way in an actual game, and then attempted to load a foot unit into the Land Transport. While the ground unit does disappear, leaving only the Land Transport showing on the map, there is no evidence that the Land Transport is acting as a transport. For instance, when I move the transport after having moved a foot unit onto the space occupied by the Land Transport, the foot unit remains behind, unaffected by what the Land Transport is doing.

Have you ever been able to edit and build a ground transport that actually acts as a transport - that is, that can carry any other units with it? I am not a programmer, but I suspect there could easily be some other differences between the configuration I am using and the one you are using that would allow you to build and use such a unit, while I cannot. Are you using a default Civ3 or C3C configuration when you build this Land Transport? Are there any other edits or special configuration parameters that are required to make this Land Transport actually work as a ground transport?

Again, thank you so much, and thank you, also, for your patience with a very bone-headed non-programmer!

Cheers -

To load a unit into the land transport, you must move the unit onto the same square as the transport, then press "l" (that's lowercase "L") or use the load button near the bottom of the screen. It's the same way you load units into armies. I think the only way to unload units from the transport is to right-click on the stack and then activate them.

Nullspace,

It works perfectly. I now have a military transport. For the reasons that Doc Tsiolkovski gave, I don't know if I will use this capability generally - perhaps only for specialized mods. Nevertheless, I am glad I can do so if I wish. Thank you for explaining this!

Someone ought to create a new land-based transport unit such as the APC from Command & Conquer or Dune series just for fun and creative.
