hi folks

i just bought a used laptop IBM 770 9548 and its got a tiny hard drive. I would like to know if laptop hard drives are universal? or is there a specific type I should be looking for. Im not asking for much, just 10G would be fine. Thanks for all your help

yeah it has usb and i bought it at such a good price. I dont want to go external. but thanks

130 canadian... not a bad deal. good screen, good battery cdrom and floopy, even the power cable, just needs a bigger hd and more ram, but when is there ever enough ram..lol

They are universal, though the ussual questions should be asked: i) What sizes does the BIOS support, ii) Which interface does the system use.

Your options will be limited by the age of the machine. I don't know anything about your particular model, but the BIOS is probably not very flexible - I cannot remember ever seeing a HDD detection option in a laptop BIOS setup, but having said that... I can't remember ever looking for that option :p

If you open the laptop, your HDD is quite accessible and about 3.5" wide - but my memory is notoriously poor. In either event, you won't mistake it for anything else. Open the machine at your own risk, as I won't take responsibility for lost screws, damage, or lost warranty :)

This probably is quite an old laptop, I've heard on other sites that older brand laptops/desktops are quite picky on what components can be installed. Perhaps that's also the case with this laptop. It would be worthwile to dig a bit deeper into google to find a tech forum where you can ask questions on what components you should use in your specific laptop. If it's OK to use noname parts you'll be off cheaper than when having to use 'original' stuff.

I would imagine prices between brands don't vary much in the second hand market.

Could be true stormbind. Personally I wouldn't go for secondhand for a HDD though, but that may be more of a personal issue than anything else. ;)
I found this forum that may be interesting for cidknee.

i have typed it into google, but i found too much stuff in chinese and im not a techy person so I thought i would ask people who speak plain English. I have a friend who is a tech looking into the bios question thanks stormblind and its a thinkpad 770 so its a bit old. but Im just gonna use it to play civ 3 at work. just want to run XP over 98 and i just bout 256 of ram for it so it should work. Thanks though.

ok multiply that by 2.2 and then add 60 for shipping and 3 months in customs. yeah its a great laptop but after duty, customs and conversion rate, I can buy one here for 1300 canadain.
