Large Number of Cities

I just started playing again after a few months. I had stopped because on large maps, the game simply became unstable and unplayable (the slightest zoom of the camera from one point to another would cause crashes, and could only be played carefully in the strategic mode). This was apparently fixed in the last patch, and I can certainly see a vast improvement.

My problem is that on large or huge maps, it eventually bogs down to the point of dire frustration, and it shows the same symptoms from before the patch, except that it is stable and will not crash. I seem to recall some months back, a thread discussing a potential bug or problem with the game once there were large number of cities on a map. I cannot find this thread, or any such information.

Has anyone else experienced this? Was it ever confirmed as a bug or problem, or was a workaround ever found? I can play fine on regular maps and smaller, but I simply enjoy playing the huge maps so much more. Just not enough to put up with the constant grinding down of play. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm new to the forums too and have been discussing this issue. It seems to be related to the number of cities and/or units the AI controls. If you're like me, you don't notice much lag during the first 100 turns or so, but right around the medeival period you start seeing the game slow down and by modern it's 45 seconds to a minute in between turns for the AI.

So far I haven't heard of a way to fix this...

I appreciate the idea, but I don't see how capping the number of workers at 1 on a huge map that may have well over a hundred cities... if I thought it was tedious now...

Oh well, back on the shelf till the next patch

solution: go buy a mac.

The game is simply designed for the player to only have a few cities. That is why there is huge maintenance costs for everything. It prevents you from going out and expanding.
