Laser vs Optical Mice

It wouldn't be stupid to get anything else - not everyone needs the high precision of a laser mouse. e.g. if all you do is play Civ4, web browsing, programming, and other general activities then you'll notice no significant difference. As for "an optical it is 100000 times better then optical", are you saying optical is better, or laser?

However, if you are playing, as has been said above, a FPS then maybe it would make a difference. I think it would also help in photo-editing too. Using an optical mouse in these activities is not the end of the world though...
google optical mouse and you'll know if i'm talking about laser...
now heres my evidence of my statement...
Say qwerty if you never seen a broken ball mouse, say qwerty if you have ever seen a wired laser mouse.

now say me me if you ever had a mouse ball mouse malfuntion or stop working because of the ball.

Even though ball mice have optical sensors, this thread is completely about ball-free mice, which can use either optical sensors in the infrared/visible range, or laser sensors, which aren't visible (but can still include an LED for looks).

And FWIW, I'm currently using a wired laser mouse...

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to say, I'm not too sure...

2000 dpi seems a bit extreme, I doin't think I could aim very well with that high of a sensitivity. My MX518 is serving me well enough :)

It's a matter of preference, but becomes necessary at higher resolutions, in order to keep accuracy.

My desktop runs at 3520x1200, and anything below a 2000dpi mouse feels hideously sluggish. Given the option, I could easily use something well above 2000dpi.

The G5 allows you to select (via some additional buttons on the mouse) the sensitivity on the fly. 2000/800/400 dpi. Also has software that allows you to alter those default settings, and to remap the buttons.
