on trade it tells me that I need sea lanes or sea routes, how do I go about getting em?

Explore the coastline using a boat, if you have a fully explored coastline between your city(s) with a harbor & their city(s) with an harbor then you have a trade route possibility.

This can be blocked by an enemy boad and/or unexplored teretory or if they do not have harbor(s)

Also trade routes over seas and oceans only become available with the discovery of Astronomy and Navigation respectively

You can trade over sea tiles before Astronomy if either you or the nation you are trading with has the Great Lighthouse.

Be careful about over sea trades, before uou can use ocean tiles. Not only can enemies block the route, but so can barb galleys. They are biligerents as well.
