This thread is for members of the Liberal Democratic Party of Yasutan to determine our policy on the adoption of the civics changes suggested by NoneOfTheAbove Elder dutchfire ; to wit, the adoption of Bureaucracy (rather than Barbarism) as Legal Civic and Slavery (rather than Tribalism) as Labor Civic. We will not bar anyone from speaking, but we would rather that the discussion be dominated by enrolled members of the LDP. Currently this category includes Joe Harker, Hyronymus, CivGeneral, and myself. Membership in the party is free to all and if you think you fit in the LDP, feel free to join. The party thread is located here.
Our stated platform grants us a lot of leeway in determining how we stand on these two civics. I will quote the platform in these two matters:
I think that LDP support for Bureaucracy at this point in time, when Free Speech is not an option, is a perfectly acceptable position. It might even be the only defensible position; our mission statement includes "caution, tolerance, and reason" as our central aims, and not adopting Bureaucracy appears to be unreasonable.
This a spikier question to answer. We have Slavery available to us, yes, but is that in line with our traditional emphasis on reason and freedom? Especially given that we may never make use of its benefits, is it really an improvement over our current system? On the other hand, do we really want to be stuck without a good Archer in that city on the frontier when ___ comes and attacks us? What are the alternatives? I haven't been able to keep track of the DG lately (one-week vacation, then studying for APs) and frankly I don't know whether or not we have alternatives. Is Caste System closer to or father from our ideology of freedom than Slavery? We need to decide this and find a good policy position.
Thanks lot.
With that, the LDP's discussion will begin.

LDP Platform said:We...prefer Free Speech to all the other civics in that category, though we do not oppose the others, and may indeed support less-free civics if circumstances demand it.

LDP Platform said:We also prefer Emancipation over all others; between the others, we will go as game strategy demands.
