Yet another great guide, thanks. I love levying for boosts, levying to attack another continent, and those rare situations where you do something odd like levying to get a hut or natural wonder for relic (Kandy) on a distant island.

In my current game I've just levied troops from Zanzibar - on the other side of the world - to defend Muscat from Saladin's holy-whatever-he-has-in-mind. I would fail to describe how I hate those CS murderers

It seems like promotions gained by CS units only count when under Levy status. When the unit reverts back to the CS the promotion are kept but the promotions do not count.

I didn't know that.
I assume if an AI then levies the CS units the promotions are reapplied?

I imagine so, I could only test levying again and I got the promos again.
But attacking it as a CS troop and battle cry is not used.
