I think most of us want a fleshed out techtree in civ4, with more options to choose different ways and deadends to get a quick advance.
However with a bigger techtree there might be good point to limit the advancement in technologies, and in other ways than forcing you to get all in different eras.
I think one way that I've seen being mentioned before in a different context was not being able to research gunpowder until you've discovered salpeter and gotten hold of it, this would of course work with all resources.
Other limits could include cultural achivements, achivements through war or expansionistic achivement.
This idea might give civ some more realism in how science progresses, and make it a bit more interresting, with not all civs at the same tech or behind, but in different branches.
Old idea? good idea? thoughts?
