Linux?

Thanks, I used Achinz's link and found one myself that I combined used to set up a smb.conf file. I haven't really been able to set up everything yet, but I think I'm at least half way. Will check SP's link soon.

In Achinz's link they talk about restarting Samba (IIRC last step) with a command that just didn't work for me. The file smb didn't exist in that directory, so where can I find it. I do have Samba installed now (after a lot of trouble...) and the command smbd -V says it's version 3 something.

Another question: How do I set up the smb.conf-file so that anyone on any windows comp (both XP, me and maybe 98) can access this space with all permissions. How do I set this up on the win computer? Do I have to use net use h:... or any other way?

The command: net use h: \\linux\pub seemed to set up okay, but I had turned off Linux before I could test writing anything to that dir.
I created the root-owned directory /pub with permission for all.

Maybe I should look for a book on this...

I can recommend "Using Samba - A File and Print Server for Heterogeneous Networks" by Robert Eckstein, David Collier-Brown & Peter Kelly published by O'Reilly. A very thorough coverage with much detailed info on specific aspects of Samba. The older edition was available for download free from their site about a year ago.

It's some time ago that I last fiddled around with installing Samba networking a Win-98 machine and a Mandrake 9.1 one. If you still haven't resolved your issues, maybe I'll look into my archives.

Right now, I run Mandrake on the win 98 machine, just to get to know it a bit. When we get our new computer at the end of March, we'll probably throw that one out however, and I'll install Mandrake on the new one.
