I'm pretty new to Civ II and I've only played a few games on easier levels (Prince & below) so far. I tend to get very bad reputation among civs and all other civs are usually enraged / hostile / icy to me. Is it because I'm more advanced than they are? Is it because I'm more powerful than they are? The other civs tend to gang up against me too. So the more I play the more I try to please other civs. However, I'm starting to get fed up. Sometimes I give a few technologies and some money to a civ, and STILL can't make it friendly enough to trade technology / sign a treaty. So, hmm... maybe I should just ignore the bad rep and do my own business of either advance as fast as possible to launch a spaceship or kill them all.

Anyway, my question is: What are the actions that will damage your reputation? And how bad?

E.g.

1. Attacking an ally - very bad
2. Breaking a peace treaty - very bad
3. Plant nuclear device with spy - bad
4. Use nuclear device - bad
5. Steal technology with spy - bad
6. Bribe city with spy - bad

(I'm not too sure of these, so do correct me if I'm wrong)

Any other actions?

Use nuclear device - very bad

Pretty much any act of espionage(sabotage, steal tech etc)

Refusing to withdraw troops.
Sneak attack.
Third party coercion

In MGE,the mere act of existing angers the AI.

You can "get away" with quite a bit under Fundy.

Good play - means if you are far in front in technology and military the other nations will allie against you and declare war , it's in a way annoying (i would prefer better AI) but makes the game more interesting on the other hand .

If I'm at war with civ A, is it okay to be sneaking to him? Can I use spies to steal his technology / subvert his cities etc without damage to my reputation? But I guess using nuclear weapons will damage reputation whether or not you're at war with the guy.

How about refusing a cease fire / peace when the enemy civ asks for it? Would that give me a bad rep? Sometimes I just want to finish off that civ or sometimes there are a few key cities I want to capture, so no way I'm going to accept any ceas fire at that point in time.

Are there any such actions ? ? ?

You'll find over time, that as long as you play ball & give the AI civs what they want when they want it they'll stay friendly. As soon as you decline a request their attitude changes very quickly.

Just worry about rep at the beginning of the game, when you might want to ally with another civ, or share maps etc. It's just too frustrating to be good throught the game, as the AI will do stupid things like invade your city radius for no reason, or demand tech all the time. Apparently Civ 3 will solve some of these problems.

But in Civ 2 rep doesn't affect your score anyway, so who cares?
