I just reinstalled my OS(Vista home premium) and am now trying to install my Civ4 games, but keep getting the same error. I did get vanilla Civ4 to load, but when I go to apply the updates, install Warlords or BtS or uninstall vanilla Civ4 I get the following error code:

Error information
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL:cpp (1194)
PAPP:Sid Meier's Civilization 4
PVENDOR:Firaxis Games (##ids-product-url)
PGUID:CFBCE 791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-DGE01F4112E8
$11.0.0.28844
@Windows (6000) BT-OTHER 12344.41

Any help would be appreciated. I did download the patches from the firaxis site a while ago(6 months to a year) and have tried running them from the disk I have them burnt on and by copying to the desktop and running them.

BTW I am loading because of a HDD failure no other hardware failures found.

Make sure that you don't have a messed up Installshield directory in the appdata folder. You can probably safely delete it or rename it if it's there.

Then patch Vanilla to 1.74, then install Warlords and BTS.

It may also get messed up if you didn't install to the default location. That's what happened to me. :(

I posted my workaround in the "Post your Win 7..." thread I started here in the tech forum.

I installed to the default location as provided through the cd, I tried to uninstall through the control panel, as I stated, this in on a fresh copy of vista home premium, so not all the windows updates were loaded when tried this. Now, I can't uninstall, even after I deleted the Firaxis folder from the program files folder. I just get the error I listed above.

You can't uninstall something that you've deleted. The system can't find the files anymore.

If you haven't emptied your Recycle Bin yet, you could try restoring Civ and then trying the uninstall again.

you could try using a restore point in System Protection and restoring the machine to a point before you installed Civ, and trying to install again.

If these don't work, you are looking at a messy procedure...

First, you need to remove the Civ related folders from C:\users\your name\my documents\my games\,

and then remove the Firaxis Games folder from C:\users\your name\appdata\roaming\

and then remove, or rename the Installshield folders from C:\users\your name\appdata\roaming\

You may also need to remove anything that says Civ from your registry.

Then try the re-install by running the setup.exe file as Administrator. Patch Vanilla to 1.74 before you try to install BTS. Run Vanilla as admin first in order to set up the CustomAssets files in your My Documents folder.

Further directions are in the guide in my sig.

Good luck. :)

Yes, I know I can't uninstall a deleted item, but when you do that through the control panel, it will say it can't find the item and ask if you want to remove it from the list.

Can't restore to a point before, I just did a clean install of the OS, no point to restore too.

Thanks for the help, but I figured out a work around.

Just FYI, Vista makes a restore point every time it boots up. Unless you have turned off that feature, or are dual booting, you should have a valid restore point Pre-Civ, as long as too much time hasn't gone by.
