This is my current GOTM 6. I checked my foreign affair minister and look what I got.

I'm at war with the Aztecs but she's receptive at me

Guess how I did that?
Ok, simple, I had the Eiffel tower. And I was at war with the Aztec for a while, because when I entered the Celts alliance, I had to declare war on the Aztec. Since I didn't clash with them for a while, that's what I obtain

Weird, isn't it? That's another paradox of the game, btw...

Eliminate the viking? My allies? They who gave me so many techs as gifst? Never! Idem for the celts. We are a very trusty trio. And btw, I don't have military units... Not even one.

I'm glad to see that you got rid of your Military units for now (our other threads). Hopefully, you made a few ships to take caravans/freight overseas though!

After your current game, you'll probably be just about ready for an OCC .

EDIT: Spelling.

I believe it's One City Challenge. I remember reading about them on the Apolyton boards. I don't know if anyone has set up any OCC's here.

OCC? What's an OCC?

My apologies for using an acronym with no explanation... yes, OCC is "One City Challenge". The objective of an OCC game is to simple land a SS as rapidly as possible. The earlier the better. Score is not the main objective, and you can never, ever, even for an instant, possess a 2nd city under any circumstances (the one time you can reload a game is if a hut gives you an advanced tribe).

I only recently tried them, but the thinking and strategy of doing an OCC game is quite a bit different in many ways. Many of the lines of different thought you have been discovering in your GOTM 6 already... such as making alliances, surviving with a weak military, figuring how to build a SS with freight, etc. So parts of your game already have some elements of an OCC game

Thanks for the explanation. But I still don't understand how can you manage to discover all the techs, with only one city. Even it can be size 20, and even in chieftain mode you'll never get them in time and build them before 2020. Unless you keep on playing after this date?

OCC is usually played on a small map. As far as I know, it is only played at deity. Unless someone "forces" me to play at a lower level (like the GOTMs do
wink.gif
), I always play at deity, and so most of my posts are in an assumed deity context.

Not only is it possible to land a SS in the 1700's or 1800's in OCC (small map, 7 civs, raging hordes, deity), but it is possible to discove almost all the science in the game by yourself. With one, single, lonely city.

And recently, I played OCC with a further restriction of size 4 limit (set file from Apolyton). So my size 4 city won by landing the first SS about 1860, I think. As I recall, that game was one that Smash (a very good OCC player) landed a SS about 7 or 8 turns ahead of me, in about 1850, but I don't remember the exact dates. BTW, I am not really an OCC expert; I've only played about 6 or 7 OCC games...

It seems impossible, but due to the underlying mathematics of the game, it is actually quite easy to do. But many of the things you have "learned" in a "normal" Civ II game will prevent a successful OCC game... so you have to get rid of a lot of "assumptions" and "rules" that apply to a large empire on a large map.

BTW, happiness is not an issue in OCC. Even a size 25 Democratic city will set 0% Luxuries, and 90% (or so) science, unless it is in a growth phase. You don't need an expensive colosseum, either, because guess what... Shakespeare's solves all unhapiness issues!!

OCC games go very fast... there is no tedium like in most late game, high scoring GOTMs.
