I really like civ4col and have played other col games like the 1994 Original and FreeCol. They each have their pros and cons but the cons of the civ4col version make the game unplayable without using player created mods.
Little tricks that worked in original aren't in the civ4 version, it's like they decided to rebalance the game but didn't actually test it. Certain rules different from the new game and the old game aside from just the graphics.
Civ4Col has new features such as:
unorganized and less efficient trade route system
unit stacking between different nations
territory system which can expand into your borders and vise versa
natives pay different amount for resources, especially early
less European events
more permanently destroyed boats
different priced boats in Europe
different function of some Founding Fathers
improved graphics
Vanilla Civ4Col feels similar to playing a very badly designed player created mod. And to top it all off, if a player created mod doesn't have a re-designed trade route system, the game becomes a headache when your colonies start becoming large, something that wasn't an issue with the original game or with FreeCol.
I'm mainly interested in a mod which has a top priority to bring the game as close to the original game as possible from a balance perspective. I've tried all the main ones available on civfanatics forums such as New Dawn, Nora, Wild West, Discovery, TAC. And while all of them are unsurprisingly superior to playing unmodded Civ4Col, non of them have real intent of creating a game like the original Colonization. In some way all the top mods feel more like a unique player created mod and less like a mod attempting to fix the broken game that is Civ4Col.
