The second problem I had today playing Civ1 DOS, I lost a granary. I was not in a war. My research was doing fine. I had a few militia, no settlers, and had just built a granary.

Then the news came "The Germans can not support granary." At first I thought they meant someone else, but then I realized I was the Germans.

How can you lose a brand new Granary. I thought granaries were supposed to enhance your cities food.

So there it was - gone! And I was left with four citizens.

What happened?

If you don't have the cash to pay the maintenance bills, one improvement from one city (at random, anyone know?) is sold off. Improvements will keep being sold to prevent you from going into debt.

Maybe our government needs a system like that...

Keep a close eye on your wealth. If it is less than 50 gold and if you are losing money every turn, you are in deep trouble. When your gold would reach 0, the computer will sell the last building you constructed to pay your debt. Any excess money is put in your treasury, but you still lost that building. It really sucks. I once built a cathedral to keep my city from disorder, but I ran out of money that turn and it sold my cathedral. 160 shields down the drain and my city stayed in disorder.
